As someone who grew up in the 90's, the classic animated Disney movies hold a special place in my heart. They were the movies of my childhood and I'm sure the same can be said for a lot of people. That being said I'm disappointed that they're remaking all of the classics. And by remake, I mean a literal shot for shot remake of the original. All the new movies look like they just followed the template/ storyboard of the originals.
Now a disclaimer: I haven't seen the new Aladdin or Lion King movies and have no intention of seeing them. Why? Because I've already seen them. Now don't get me wrong, I do appreciate them trying to bring them to life out of animation, but it's just very hollow. It's like they took a picture of one scene and would tell the actors to stand in exactly the same way on the same spot. It just doesn't make the movie enjoyable or even watchable.
Another reason why I refuse to watch them is the numerous bad reviews for the movies. All of the reviewers say the same view words. They called them "boring" and "cold". Normally I don't pay movie reviews that much attention or credit because I've seen movie's deemed bad by reviewers and found them enjoyable. But, the fact that they all have a common theme in their reviews does warrant my attention.
I think the selling point of The Lion King was that they made all the animals look realistic, opting for a photo realistic take, rather than animation. The problem is that the characters/animals are made emotionless and cold. In the original you could see when a character was upset, happy, or angry and from the clips I've seen you can't tell what anyone of them are feeling. It just looks like a lion saying that it's sad. The whole movie just seems like a national geographic documentary that happens to have singing.
Speaking of music, since the animals can't really act, they also can't be choreographed. The great "Lion King" music is playing, Beyonce and Donald Glover are singing it, but there's a lifelessness that can't be ignored.
Now with all of this being said, I'm sure that all of these movies make millions of dollars and I'm sure that they're going to do great things for the Disney brand. That's why they were made in the first place. No one asked for these movies. They're just money grabs. Now they're doing The Little Mermaid and Mulan. Disney is killing my childhood.
