Discrimination is the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex (as Google defines it).
In most of your history classes, you have heard this in some form or fashion, but many people don't know or are oblivious to the fact that it still affects people across the world. Many of you may know about discrimination concerning racism, but others exist too. Sexuality discrimination is another major discrimination because people aren't accepting of who those with different sexualities are.
Why does this discrimination occur?
Discrimination occurs because a certain person doesn't agree with the beliefs or ideas of another person or group of people. The discrimination concerning racism can occur because people believe that people of color are less entitled than people without color.
Contrary to their beliefs, the only difference between the two groups is that one group has pigmented skin and the other group doesn't; it's that simple. Just because someone appears different doesn't mean they can't perform a certain task. This also goes along with sexuality; just because someone is a homosexual person doesn't mean they aren't capable of the same as a heterosexual person.
Since the beginning of civilizations, people diverged into a society and certain standards were set, as were rankings. People that were different based on where they were from and how they appeared were treated differently. Our ancestors had it all wrong; diversity makes society a better place.
When you have a diverse group of people in one location, people from different backgrounds and experiences collide and performance of academics and well-being increase. Hence, discrimination has no place anywhere.
Anywhere I've been, personally, I have experienced discrimination in some form or fashion. At College of Charleston I have experienced less, but much more than I expected.
College of Charleston recently held a theatrical event where students performed what they believed was the struggle of an African-American man. After the event, there was a discussion and many of the colored people spoke up about how they felt unsafe and unwanted around the campus; I was shocked.
People shouldn't feel unsafe or unwanted just because of their skin color or their belief system, but somehow it always happens. How can we change that?
From the event, the president of the Black Student Union at CofC told us the way to change this is to inform people that have been misinformed. (http://itooamcofc.tumblr.com ) This is a website where Black Student Union students (2014) used the slogan "I AM, TOO, COFC."
They give reasons why people believe they are less entitled or have the inability to do something, So, if you hear someone saying or portraying a racial, homosexual, or any kind of discrimination remark, tell them they're wrong; stand up for what is right. Don't keep silent, spread the word because discrimination has no place anywhere.
