Discovering The Power Of Passion

Lately, the question “What are you passionate about?” has been racing through not only my mind but, seemingly, the minds of most around me. Everyone is trying to find that one entity that they can dive into and devote all their time and efforts to. There are a great deal of interests you can involve yourself in, but which of those actually becomes a life passion? Stop and look around you. Who do you know that has really found that one true passion? Many find something that they carry with them and use it as a tool as well as a way to define who they really are, whiles other struggle every day to find that essential feature in their life.

Thankfully, I was able to discover my passion early in my life; music. I started playing the piano when I was just five years old and out of all the interests I had at that time, music came the easiest. I knew I had to work for every note that I plucked out of my piano, but I recognized it would all be worth it. I quickly realized that this could no longer be a hobby or a pastime I could take for granted.

To me, music is something that flows through my veins. It can describe my every emotion in a single chord or melody without actually verbalizing any sensation. Its power is indescribable. Within minutes of listening to expressive music, your entire life can be transformed. Music goes beyond the black and white notes on the page. It has a deeper meaning but it is not complicated. It wants you to feel but does not want you to be saddened. It heals the wounds that have been cast on you and attempts to make you stronger. And I am still only talking about music. This extraordinary quality that it takes on is something that you do not and really cannot find in all the passions that people have. Its never-ending stream of availability is what really caught me in the first place. Being an only child, it is always difficult to have someone, other than your parents, that could always be there for you. But, I know that as long as I have music in my life, I will never be alone. Music has become who I am. I am not solely Kalliopi Logothetis but rather, Kalliopi Logothetis, musician. I carry that title loud and proud wherever I go because I know that even in my darkest hour, music will be there to lift my spirits up and nothing can tarnish that drive.

That is what passion is all about. It is finding the one thing that you know at the end of the day has the ability to pick you up from your bootstraps. If a passion can’t do that, then it isn’t a passion, it is an interest. So, when people ask, “What are you passionate about?,” my response is simple. Music; that is my passion. What’s yours?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
