The Sudden Change Of Sophomore Year

The Sudden Change Of Sophomore Year
Annika Soderfelt

Here's the thing. Sophomore year isn't coasting like one would hope. When you come into your freshman year of college, you're expecting massive amounts of change in your life, so it doesn't smack you upside the head. Going into sophomore year, you have an initial feeling of "psh, I've got this, I've been here before" but it doesn't take long for that to change. You've moved to a new side of campus, you're classes are completely different, your friend group may have shifted, your activity preferences have become more pronounced, and you quickly realize that, just like last year, it's going to be a time of just figuring things out.

I've only been at school for two weeks now, so I can't really pretend to be the all knowing master of my second year of college, but I've already seen strides since even the summer time. I've started running (willingly), I tried out for the musical and acapella, I'm still meeting new people, and so much more. It may not all work out in my favor, but I'm going into it with an open mind because, hey, what do I have to lose. I'm not getting any younger, and, as all adults are all too happy to tell me, the time will fly by faster than I realize.

In High school, I had a teacher who joked that those people who were sophomores should really be called sophomorons, which, having been a part of this group twice now, is pretty fair. You're not top dogs like seniors, getting ready for the future like juniors, or adorable babies like freshmen. You're just kind of there. You're the middle child of the family equivalent in school, but, NEVER FEAR. You're not doomed to a life of boredom, plateauing, or normalcy. It's in your hands to choose how to live your life. The school year isn't all powerful and binding.

If you're a sophomore, either in college or high school, try to use the time to explore something new. Meet new people, try new activities, branch out. You never know what you may find. You may stumble across the love of your life, a passion that turns into an additional major or minor, lifelong mentorships and friendships, and so much more. So, keep your eyes open, because you never know when life is just gonna smack you in the face with an opportunity you never expected.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
