5 Different Letters The Chicago 'L' Could Be Instead

There are a lot of great letters, but these five are the best fit for our beloved train system!

One fact that’s engrained in each and every good little Chicagoan’s head is that the ‘L’ train is called that because it’s Elevated.

It’s an elevated train on elevated tracks in an elevated city. It’s been a good nickname for our beloved CTA thus far, but I think if we ever were to spice things up and change the letter, these following five would be great candidates!

1. T

‘T’ is the most obvious choice. The ‘T’ would most likely stand for ‘Ticket’ since everyone needs a ticket to get on the train. ‘T’ could also stand for ‘Tracks’ because the trains ride on a series of tracks around the city. Or ‘T’ could stand for ‘Travel’ based on how passengers travel from stop to stop when they’re on the train. It could also stand for ‘Tired’. Or ‘Time’. Or ‘Ticket’. Or ‘Ricky’. Or ‘Teacup’. Or ‘Tennessee’. The ‘T’ could stand for a lot of things—it could stand for ‘Things’—but one word it really shouldn’t signify is ‘Train’. That might be a little too on-the-nose.

2. R

‘R’ is another great choice for our beloved train system, in honor of Ricky the Clown, one of its most popular riders. Whenever you hop into one of the L’s train cars, you never know if you might stumble upon Ricky, just sittin’ there munching on his signature avocado and singing the chorus to “I Will Always Love You”, but only the Dolly Parton version, if you dare to ask him to clarify. Ricky is quite the character—a local celebrity—and honoring him by naming the train system he loves to ride so much after him would certainly be something special.

3. A

‘A’ is a fabulous choice. If you didn’t already know, ‘A’ is the first letter of the alphabet, making it a fan favorite, and Chicago’s famous train system is the favorite in our hearts. No other subway system can compare! Pairing these two favorites together would be like peanut butter and chocolate, Sonny and Cher, Ricky the Clown and trains. ‘A’ certainly is a standout choice in this renaming competition.

4. I

‘I’ is just a fun letter. Who wouldn’t want to say they’re hopping on the “I” to get to work? I bet Ricky the Clown would.

5. N

‘N’ would most likely stand for the common Chicagoan phrase, “Nothing Is Quite As Great As This Wondrous Town Of Chicago, This Windy City, This City Of Broad Shoulders, This Stinky Onion, O' This Great City of Ours”. This lyrical lullaby was first thought up by our favorite subway clown, Ricky, and now you can hear its elegance whenever you pass through the turnstiles at a CTA train station. Why not just go one step further and name the whole system after it?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
