Society, It's Time We Put Less Value On 'Education' And More On 'Knowledge'

Our education system has faltered. What we know is more valuable than how much we know.

When it comes down to it, everything can be taken from you at one point in your life. Everything. You can lose your family, your house, your job, any physical aspect of your life can be taken. Everything except for what you know.

I have always been someone who has greatly valued my education because I strongly believe that what you know is the only thing that can’t get taken from you. Physically, at least, no one can walk into your life and take it away from you.

After thinking about what my education means to me, I’ve come to a conclusion that I don’t necessarily value my education. Rather, I value my knowledge.

I think it’s stressed too much in today’s society that kids and young adults need to stay in school and get smarter so they can get a good job, so they can make a lot of money, so they can get a big house and raise a proper family and thus repeat the cycle.

But I think that’s wrong. I think the education system is wrong and were not being taught in the right way. I value my knowledge. I value what I know and that’s something that I don’t want to change. I do not think education is the most important thing in the world.

Here’s why.

Education has been forced upon us from age five until we were about 18 years old. After that, it’s a choice. Some of the best and brightest people I know didn’t finish or even go to college.

I don’t think you need education, but you need knowledge. And you can get knowledge from almost anything.

Education is taught to us in such a straightforward manner. Here’s a book, read some chapters. Here’s a quiz, answer some questions. You’re limited to what you learn and what you get to know. When you’re in school, you don’t get a choice of what it is that you get taught. Knowledge is a choice and I think that is something that needs to be taught more.

Knowledge is something that can be found through anything. It’s like you’re left with this infinite world of possibilities and an abundance of things. You can teach yourself to know so much of the world it’s almost as if you don’t know where to start.

I think that’s a problem with the education system. Basically, it’s the fact that we don’t always get the freedom or choice of what it is that we want to do, or know.

All of this is just a matter of opinion. I don’t think the education system can be changed. But I think the way that we value our education and value ourselves is what can be changed. Knowledge and education and the power of what we know is such a valuable thing. It’s the only thing that’s ever physically ours and our own. And I think we sometimes take advantage of that. Believe me, there’s nothing I would ever give up for my ability to have an education. But as I’ve said, I’ve come to learn that it’s the knowledge I have that I value.

All in all, education and knowledge have the ability to be the same thing. I think we need to adapt more to the fact that knowledge needs to be valued. Education is a choice. What we choose to learn is up to us. And our knowledge is the only thing that can’t ever get taken away.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
