You're probably laughing at my hashtag. If you don't know what I am talking about, you missed it. However, I will be glad to say it again, #DiabetesInABox.
You know, seeing people post pictures of their Dunkin' Donuts box filled with donuts and an Instagram caption of "#DiabetesInABox" is really rude considering that isn't what diabetes in a box really looks like (See the above picture to see diabetes in a box). If arrogant people want to continue to use the hashtag, "diabetes in a box," maybe they should consider making it an accurate statement like I did.
Anyways, HAPPY NATIONAL DIABETES AWARENESS MONTH. This is how I intend to bring awareness this year. Not just through #DiabetesInABox am I trying to bring about awareness, but with this article, I hope to spread the news about a chronic illness that needs more attention.
Type I Diabetes is a chronic illness.
This means that once you are diagnosed with it, you will have to live with it for the rest of your life. This brings a lot of hardships for those who struggle with the disease on a day to day basis. It requires about six finger pricks a day, at least six shots a day if you are not on a pump, a shot every three days if you're on a pump, lots of counting of carbohydrates, math, and many other things.
Type I Diabetes is a job.
Kids as young as 2 (and even younger) deal with this disease. That means they go through things no child should have to face and have their childhood taken away for. However, since there is no cure, this is the unfortunate truth for now.
Type I Diabetes doesn't get as much attention as other life-threatening diseases get.
It should, though. Type I Diabetes is deadly. If we can bring about more awareness of the disease, that is one big step we are taking.
Let's just make sure we are educated about the disease, too.
Here is the picture of #DiabetesInABox to remind you that I am diabetes in a box and not your Dunkin' Donuts.
Together we can turn Type I into Type None if we can make this disease more known and educate the world around us. I encourage you if you have Type I Diabetes to hashtag "DiabetesInABox" a picture of yourself like I have done to bring about awareness.
Happy National Diabetes Awareness Month people, let's cure Type I Diabetes.
