Des Moines Goin' Up On A Tuesday

Thanks Drake, for rocking our world.

The best thing about being young is that you can make spontaneous decisions — like the one I made with my best friend to buy a ticket to Drake and Future last minute for their Des Moines concert last week. And I have to be honest — it may be one of the best choices I've ever made.

We definitely went up on a Tuesday, courtesy of Drake, Future, and their openers. And while yes, Drake came on late, he did not disappoint. He sang a range of his music, and allowed Future to debut his own miniature show in the middle of his set. But his music was not what made the night so amazing — it was Drake himself.

It's very stereotypical (and scripted) for performers to declare their love for every single stop on tour; and if you've ever been to a concert you know exactly what I mean. The whole:

"You guys are my best crowd yet! I love you guys!"

But this isn't what happened. First, Drake came out on stage sporting local University getup, including articles of clothing from both University of Iowa (A Hawkeye wind breaker) and, conveniently named, Drake University (A vintage letter jacket and a basketball jersey) and continued to wear them for the rest of the show. And although this may not have been unique to Des Moines only, it really made it feel incredibly special.

Here he is, pictured above, wearing his Drake University basketball jersey.

And while he did declare his love for our city; it was not in the stereotypical, cheesy, or scripted way — but the opposite. Sincere, genuine, and true. Des Moines, it is fair to say, considered to be a small town in comparison with others that are visited while on major tours. But we don't act like one. Our crowds are incredible; and we act just as big as other major cities like Chicago, and in the words of Drake, as big as his hometown, Toronto.

And the best thing is; he was genuinely surprised by this. He was genuine, and stated constantly throughout the night his disbelief and sincere love for our city. And it only made the concert so so much more enjoyable. Of course there were the scripted moments that every city gets the obligation of hearing; but it was so much more than that. In fact — he promised that we "had him forever now," and confirmed it later that night on Instagram:

He posted this picture on Instagram after the show with the caption "IOWA I WILL BE BACK EVERY TOUR."

And finally, after wowing us at the show, Drake followed through on completing showing his love for Des Moines by going to Drake University. The university, who had started a campaign "#BringDrakeToDrake" had been trying to convince the rapper to come to campus, and when he never did, they showed true disappointment. However, it turns out Drizzy only got to Des Moines a short time before the show, and he DID go to Drake, but only when most of them were sleeping — after the show, at two in the morning.

Thank you Drake, for making your first show in Des Moines so memorable, and capturing our hearts. You made it so special, and we hope to see you again soon. Stay golden.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
