From her Disney Channel days to now, Demi Lovato is someone I've always looked up to. I've admired how strong she is for dealing with what she's gone through and speaking out about it. She doesn't hide her mental illness or her drug problems like other stars have. She writes about her issues in her songs, like the song, "Sober", that she released last week.
Two days after that song was released, she was rushed to the hospital for a heroin overdose. I admire her for writing about her struggles in her songs. You can hear in her voice that she feels bad about going downhill again.
Over the past few days, I've heard different sides of how people feel about the overdose. Some are sending love and prayers to the singer, and some are saying that she's a drug addict who shouldn't be praised. I stand with the people who are loving and supporting her through her rough time.
Demi has struggled with using drugs, her depression, and other mental illnesses for a long time, and she's been pretty open about it throughout the years. Mental illnesses are such a difficult thing to deal with. They're not physical pain, that you can just take a few pills and get rid of it. You have to find ways to manage it.
Different things work for different people. Some people meditate and some people drink or smoke. She used heroin and other drugs as a coping mechanism.
Now, I'm not saying that using heroin is a good way to cope. Obviously, it's not, and I don't support that. I'm saying she has struggled with her mental illnesses, and she wanted to escape the pain of it, even if there's a chance she can overdose. She knows she has a problem and will try to get help like she said in her latest song.
While Demi is going through this rough time, we all need to stand by her and show her love and support, not call her a drug addict and say she's "only praised because she's a celebrity". No one is praising that she used heroin. There's a difference between praising someone and supporting someone.
Demi is such a genuine and talented artist, and she really deserves to be happy and healthy. She's one of the only artists I've listened to and felt connected to for such a long time. She really needs people by her side, supporting her through this hard time. The last thing she needs is people judging her.
She's only human. Just like everyone else, she has hard times. How would you feel if someone was judging you for doing something you're trying to get help for? Like I said a few times before, she KNOWS she has a problem and she's going to get help like she said in her song. Especially after her overdose, I think she'll get the help she needs.
I'm rooting for you, Demi. I know you'll make it past this.
