Throughout the past few years, the worries about addiction and drugs in general have skyrocketed all around the world. One of the most popular, famous spokespeople about addiction has been Demi Lovato, and rightfully so as she has struggled will using for many years.
This past Tuesday, July 24th, Lovato was rushed to the hospital after supposedly overdosing on heroin. This sparked so much controversy as I stepped onto Twitter to see what exactly was going on. I viewed many updates of people stating disgusting things about addicts in general. The hate itself was too much to even read in one sitting.
I know many people in my life and in my friends' lives who have struggled with addiction. Drugs are everywhere and the sad thing is that being so close to those who've struggled with addiction only makes me wonder more why it even exists to begin with. After the news came out about Demi, so many people were talking about how addicts were trash and that they should be killed off entirely. This in itself broke my heart.
I believe that addicts are people, just like me and you. The only difference is that they got into a difficult situation, felt helpless, and decided that a drug was the only thing that could make them feel better. As fellow human beings, I think we need to be more concerned with that instead of how to get rid of addicts entirely. We need to be more concerned about how to reach out and help those who feel helpless.
People need to help the people.
Addiction is a disease. The truth is that there are so many addictions out there that people don't realize that they are considered addicts as well. I consider myself to be an addict, in some cases. I am addicted to the feeling of being accepted and wanted in an environment. I am addicted to speaking to some people and having them show me that they care about me. I am addicted to feeling. Just because I am addicted to some things, does that mean I should die too?
It breaks my heart that people I know and love struggle with addiction. Their mistakes follow me around all of the time, to the point where I am treated just like another addict. My own brothers, both older and younger, struggle with drug addiction. Due to the experiences in their lives, they've decided to choose drugs over education. They decided that they wanted to get high to forget about their problems.
The simple fact that people have to get high to forget about their lives is something so saddening, it's hard to even imagine. Lovato is no exception. She does not get a free pass because she is a celebrity. She gets the same amount, if not more, of haters in her life because of her addiction. The thing we all have to remember, though, is that we all struggle. There is no judge in this world greater than God, and we are no one to judge others.
Keep in mind that we are all people. People need to help the people.
