If one were to compare the seasons of a long-running television series, such as "Breaking Bad," you would see them comparing the same characters, their growth, and their actors. American "Horror Story," on the other hand, is an anthology series in which each season follows a different theme and storyline than the last.
American Horror Story so far has seven seasons, all of which are vastly different from each other. While it is harder to rank character development and actors, as they change sometimes over the seasons, the differences in the seasons make it quite easy to tell which seasons were stronger than others.
Here is a complete list of the best (and the least impressive) seasons of American Horror Story.
(P.S Spoilers are ahead! So if you haven’t seen a season, skip over it!)
7. Season 5: Hotel
Highs: I honestly cannot think of many, as there were so many plots that started off nicely enough, but either got dropped or just kind of were not explained. I enjoyed Sara Paulson’s Hypodermic Sally, who should have had a much more involved role in the story. Liz was also an enjoyable character, which once again, was under-utilized.
Lows: This season made me miss Jessica Lange a lot, as they brought in Lady Gaga to “carry” the season to replace her, but for me, it just did not work. She did a decent job (better than I think many expected her to do), but it just was not comparable to Lange.
Overall, Hotel seemed to just have too many storylines (i.e the serial killer investigation and the vampires).
6. Season 3: Coven
Highs: Angela Basset’ performance was outstanding and so was Lily Rabe’s.
Lows: The Stevie Nick’s cameo was just confusing to me. I understand a lot of people really enjoyed this, but personally, it was just extra fluff in the plot line to me (though I enjoyed her performance of 7 Wonders).
I am sure that a lot of people will disagree with me on this, as people seem to either hate or love this season, but for me, there were just too many plot holes and random backstories that were nice to see, but just, once again, “fluff.”
Questions about if death is, in fact, permanent or not is one that I have about the show, as they made that very confusing when some could die permanently, while others were able to just die and be like “surprise I’m back!”
5. Season 4: Freak Show
Highs: The opening of the first episode in which Twisty murders 2 teenagers.
Lows: The random villains. They needed to stick to one, not multiple, as it made the plotline confusing.
I really liked how they cast real people to play the “freaks,” as I felt in a weird way it raised awareness on being humane to all people, regardless of physical appearance.
While Sara Paulson did show the great extent of her acting abilities in this season and Lange’s character’s background was enjoyable to see play out, the beginning of Dandy turning into a killer seemed decent at first, but quickly he became just another ‘random’ killer.
4. Season 6: Roanoke
Highs: The connection with Lana Winters from Asylum was nice to see since it tied the seasons together nicely.
Lows: The randomness of the neighboring meth dealers.
The show seemed to be dragged on way too long and I appreciate the writers trying to do something different, but the big twist just seemed as if the writers knew the last couple seasons had been weak and wanted another big twist.
3. Season 7: Cult
Highs: Sara Paulson and Evan Peters performances were, once again, incredible.
Lows: There were some random plot lines thrown in (such as the Zodiac Killer).
I have watched all 7 seasons, but I must admit that it has been hard for me to continue watching, after some seasons I thought to be weak, but after this recent season it seems that American Horror Story is back on track.
This season seemed to deliver the political satire that America is so desperately in need for at the moment.
2. Season 1: Murder House
Highs: The big twist when Violet realized that she has been dead for weeks.
Lows: Not really a low, just more of a ‘what the heck’ to me, was the gimp monster.
The season is what started it all; it had an amazing plot, with twists that no one saw coming and it shared the story not only of a haunted house with ghosts who were torn apart by their grief, but also the family living there who was experiencing the same thing.
1. Season 2: Asylum
Highs: The name game was amazing and there are too many things to even list here that worked well.
Lows: The aliens were a bit much.
This season to me embodies the name of the series perfectly: American HORROR story. This truly is horrifying, as it takes place in a creepy asylum and has everything from the creepiest serial killer the whole series has to offer and creepy doctors.
The season had a lot of people that would be cast out in society at that time, such as a lesbian, but somehow with the brilliant story line, it all worked well to talk about how the asylum really put them through hell.
