It is no secret that Major League Baseball has a doping problem, and Dee Gordon is now just another name to throw in the pile. It should not be a surprise these days that a player is using Performance Enhancing Drugs, but it seems different with Dee Gordon for some reason.
Gordon is one of the good guys in baseball right? Or so we thought he was. He had an incredible 2015 season with the Miami Marlins, and was looking to expand off his success this year. Gordon has been well respected among the baseball community since he was a kid trying to make the Dodgers roster. Everyone loves him and he loves his fans. He loves the game of baseball, which is what baseball fans love. You can see it in his eyes and the way he goes about his business. That is why this news is so surprising.
Also if you know what Gordon looks like, there is no reason for him to be a suspect. He struggles every year just to keep the weight that he has. It is worth noting that Barry Bonds is the Marlins' hitting coach, but it has been confirmed that he didn't have anything to do with Gordon's use.
This certainly does not look good for the game of baseball at all. Fans already do not like the new review process and all of the rules. So what should Major League Baseball do now? Today players are still caught taking PED's even though they know how bad the consequences can be.
There is not a ton Rob Manfred can do, but he needs to do what he can. Obviously, the players caught using would rather take the risk than play honestly. Manfred needs to up the punishment for doping. When one of baseball's good guys goes down, you have to do something. Increase the number of games, or do something of that nature. Some players have even suggested a lifetime ban from the game. While I do think a lifetime ban is too much, I also think they really need to reconsider the level of punishment.
It is sad to see Gordon get punished, but it is the right thing to do and hopefully other players can learn from his mistake.
