The phrase, "new year, new you" does not only have to revolve around your personality. It can be about your style, attitude, and the way you go about living your life in general. Personally, redesigning my room at both my home and in my dorm gives me something to look forward to, since I've learned that re-designing the physical attributes of where you spend a majority of your time contributes to a refreshed sense of positivity and attitude. Here are some ideas as to how to go about decorating or re-decorating your room this semester:
1. Update your pictures.
Every semester, you're bound to make new friends, meet new people, and visit places you haven't been to before. Updating your photos or adding to an already existing collection is an easy way of contributing a new vibe to your room. It also is a great way to remind yourself of the positive people in your life, including family and friends you may not see often. Printing online pictures, developing film, or putting up polaroid pictures all add extra comfort in the place you live.
2. Add some string lights.
Regardless of how you decide to set up your room, adding string or globe lights is a great way to contribute extra light and decoration to your room. They are helpful for when you want to work late at night while your roommate is trying to sleep, and additionally, add a bohemian style to any room. They are also a creative addition during the holiday season and colder months.
3. Hang up a meaningful message or quote.
As corny as it may sound, hanging up a quote that inspires you adds a unique and personal touch to your side of the room. Some people decide to type it out and hang it in a nice frame, put up stickers with the phrase written out, or purchase it on a poster or sign.
4. Put up a tapestry and/or dreamcatcher.
A tapestry is a perfect option for a blank wall, and also works as a decoration that both you and your roommate can share in the middle of your room. Additionally, a large dreamcatcher looks beautiful hung above your pillows, and even by itself has enough detail for the entire wall.
5. Buy some decorative pillows.
Decorative pillows are a great way to add decoration and exhibit your personality at the same time. The designs, quotes, and colors all look beautiful if you match them with the other decor in the room. Changing your pillows around every semester gives a new feeling to the room, and no matter what design or pattern you decide on, contributes to making your room a comfortable and warm environment to spend time in. Websites such as Dormify, Target, Pbteen, or HomeGoods are great outlets to choose pillows that represent who you are and where your interests lie.
6. Check out Pinterest, Tumblr, and Etsy for inspiration.
Browsing online for inspiration and new ideas is a great way to go about redecorating your room. The websites list multiple "Do It Yourself" Projects and all have thousands of pictures, videos and blog posts to inspire the inner designer you are.It is never too late to decide to redecorate or find new inspiration for how you want to set up your room. Rearranging furniture every semester and shopping with your roommate over break for new decor are great ways to help you anticipate a sometimes dreaded return to school.
