I honestly worry about the anger and rage that is stirring in the underbelly of our country. The pandemic has taken our everyday life and turned it into isolation, frustration, and confusion. The mask debate is a topic discussed in video chats, on social media, on radio and television settings, and along jogging paths. When a customer walks into any business in America there is a sign that cautions the customer to wear a mask, social distance, and be mindful of their fellow customer. Office buildings and sidewalks along open spaces, amusement parks, and shopping centers have plaques on the floor six feet apart to remind everyone to social distance.
Then there is the school opening debate. The frustration parents feel being forced to choose this. In my small group of friends, I found most are doing the online school in Orange County. Their children can be face to face via their laptops to get the best possible instructions from their teachers. Friends that chose a career to teach are torn between the safety of their family and the need to help their students learn and grow. Everyone understands that getting our children back to learning and a continued routine is a must. However, at what cost? Can we trust that we are not going to cause more harm than good to the youth of America? I am on the side of the teachers, let them create a safe space to teach in the best way they know-how. Maybe this is the time our country gives the educators the financial benefits and tools they have waiting decades for.
I have also read several articles in the Orlando Sentinel regarding the increase in firearms and ammunition. Let me be clear, this increase did not start after the Black Lives Matter Movement. It started in the early months of April and increased over time. First time applications for firearms has tripled from previous years. This concept confuses me. It isn't like the pandemic can break into your home like a burglar. You are more likely to get this virus while outside your home. Oh, by the way, concealed carry applications did not increase. So, there is probably a lot of gun owners walking around with a gun illegally. Chances are we have seen them on social media garnishing their firearm and telling the innocent employee his constitutional rights are being violated because he is required to wear a mask.
Also, the country is inching closer to the presidential election. That said, we have watched the current president try to turn the democratic process into a scam. Many knew this was going to happen. However, the pandemic has put a twist on the way most of us would cast our votes. The debate between absentee voting and mail-in voting is a waste of a conversation. They are the same thing, Mr. President. Just because you voted absentee and the media called you out on it, you are willing to accept that it is valid. However, the semantic of the words absentee and mail-in is going too far. You do understand there are a lot of your supporters that cannot stand in a voting line due to COVID-19? Many will for the sake of making the change in the government garnish a hazmat suit to cast a vote. I am one of them.
The president's hope is for a low turnout this November, this is a tool many politicians use to keep their seats. We can't allow this to happen. Our country's health and democracy are in jeopardy due to the lack of responsibility and leadership in the Oval Office.
