Dear United States of America,
I have a hard time believing that we are a racist nation. We are not. What we do have is racist people in this country to claim to be Americans. They aren't Americans They are invaders who have sought to destroy the American way. Our nation is a melting pot and we, the citizens of the United States, welcome those who want to partake in the American way of life. By American way, I don't mean the language we speak or the foods that we eat. I mean the American values of creating equal opportunities for all citizens.
The American way is the idea that we all have rights. Rights for free speech, rights for practicing our own religion, rights that allow us to vote, rights that allow us to protect ourselves and rights that allow us to live freely as any race, ethnicity or gender.
We don't live in a racist nation because we have established through our rights and through laws that all citizens are equal. The nation isn't racist. The invaders of the American ideals are racist.
Maybe this will be the era that no longer tolerates racism in the United States. Then, one day kids will be reading their history textbooks in school learning about all the racism that existed and they'll wonder to themselves "Wow, I can't imagine what it would be like to live in a world like that," just as many of us did when we read about slavery and times of segregation.
So I hope one day soon, young kids will also have a hard time picturing what it would be like to live in a world where racism existed because racism will become obsolete and something only found in history books.
So where do we go from here, America?
Continue to educate the young, the old and all those in between. Educate each other on the past and what we've all read in our history books.
Treat everyone equally and don't judge people off of their race, ethnicity, gender, religion, or profession. Don't ever group a certain collection of people together and identify them as one thing. Because remember at the end of the day, all the Americans bleed red, white and blue. There's nothing wrong with being white, black or anything in between. There is nothing wrong with being a cop. Not all white people are racist, not all people of color are criminals and not all cops are bad. Insert any race, ethnicity, gender, religion, profession in and the results are all the same. We cannot label groups of people as one identity because that is just foolish and counterintuitive.
What is wrong is treating humans like they are inferior based on their skin color or ethnicity. We did not fight to be a free nation alone; we fought together and united as one for liberty and justice for all.
