Dear College Roommate, I Hope For You
Alina Devoogd

Dear Roommate,

Well as we leave this year I'm glad I got to share the room in which I laughed, wept, slept, and lived, with you. When we came to college we never thought past what would happen in our first year, we were just so excited that we were going to be roommates with our best friend from home. It didn't occur to me at all that after only two semesters we wouldn't be living together, but opportunities for new experiences always arise.

As you live with three other girls, just know that they will never be as cool as me. I'm sure they are great, but they definitely aren't me. My door is always open please come on in. I won't have any roommates, so you won't ever bother them. I hope your new roommates decorate for your birthday, get ice cream with you at 12:30 am because you're stressed and want to eat your feelings with sugary bliss. I hope that they know it takes a metaphorical crowbar to get information out of you but it's worth trying because you're full of knowledge and you're hilarious.

I hope you get your license so that way you don't worry about getting rides to Meijer for toilet paper, and that your roommates buy toilet paper so you're not stealing it from bathrooms on campus (yikes sorry!) Your roommates better recycle and you better, too. Recycle everything you can and waste little since I won't be there to remind everyone to worry about the environment. Make your room a place for you where you can focus and relax because Lord knows you need to de-stress.

Remember to take care of yourself for the love of all that is good and bad. Sometimes you get stressed, cannot focus and don't efficiently do your work then you don't have time and you are more stressed and don't sleep it’s a terrible cycle. College is a hard life. When you're not taking care of yourself mentally you won't be able to do as well on everything, so go to bed early. Don't stop going to the gym. Go on Tumblr less, cut out distractions, do yoga, drink tea, hydrate or die-drate, but make sure you're taking care of yourself. Think positive thoughts don't be so hard on yourself or life. You will be okay. You got this.

Also, I hope you don't let your boyfriend distract you so much. Take that time away, turn off your phone for 3 hours and do your work. He doesn't need to call you multiple times in an hour and you don't need to go to his every call. I could never spend 30 minutes with you without him calling you for something. I am so glad that you have a boy whose world is you but don’t let that consume you. He's a chill dude but y'all need to chill out. And stop whispering when you're with other people it's a little weird.

I am going to miss so many things about living with you. Dance parties in the kitchen and sitting on my bed eating ice cream and watching How I Met Your Mother. I'm going to miss when we're sitting there take late night breaks to taco bell. Sharing the cost of a textbook because we share it so it's always in our room. Waking up and seeing you in some weird position hidden like a burrowing animal. The way you get really slap happy late at night and your whole personality is just comedy. All of the little quirky amazing things that are a part of your daily life at home and when you and I are out somewhere, and we say, "let's go home" and we're going to the same place.

Please text me all the time next year and don't find excuses not to do things with me. Come over to my dorm we are literally on the same campus. Do homework with me, grab a meal with me, go to the gym with me, please reach out to me. Take some pictures with me gosh darn it you're not ugly and all our pictures are from high school. Make plans and stick to them I want to do things. Even though we might not be living together I still want to do this whole college thing with my best friend. You're a bean my pal you're a bean.

Much love,

Alina

p.s. I'm leaving you the minion banana-scented 3-in-1 wash when I move out it's all your's.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
