Dear Rachel Platten,
First of all, thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to come and perform at a small private college in North Texas on a Friday night. Your performance was stellar and every student enjoyed it.
You are my inspiration. You showed every TCU student that Friday night the power of never giving up on your dreams. I know for me that relentlessly pursuing this dream of yours for twelve years must have been unimaginably tough when you faced rejection after rejection and people asking you why you were wasting your time.
I know that your singles aren't as popular yet as Beyoncé's and that you are not featured as much in the media as these individuals. I know that it is not fair that the pop songs that grab the most attention are the ones that are explicitly about hooking up and having sex. It stinks that these musicians do not address other more important issues such as standing up for others. Unfortunately, that these musicians have influenced society so much that our youth "need" a significant other to live a significant life. These pop singers have helped make hooking up a norm instead of choosing to remain abstinent until the night of your wedding. The truth is that we do not need a significant other to fill in the void within us, all we need is to open our hearts up to God.
Many of these musicians do not give enough credit to the people working in the background to make their performances possible, their interaction with the crowd is not genuine, and their passion for performing is sometimes not there at all. They just do it for the money.
Most of all, many of these musicians are not good role models for our youth. Many of them have gotten in trouble with the police for driving under the influence, doing drugs, promoting porn, and associating with the wrong people.
I am glad you are not like those musicians. I am glad that you are taking steps to empower every single young adult out there to be better and do better.
I enjoyed how your songs related to the normal youth's life. I know that all of us have been told one time or another that our dream that we are pursuing is impossible to achieve. But you have showed all of us that despite the haters and doubters telling you NO, that you have the right to say YES and prove them wrong.
-Sincerely,
Miku
