Dear People That Stereotype Black Girls, You May Stop Now

People stay doubting us.

Anger.

That’s the one characteristic everyone associates with me. Well, not just me but every black woman. It’s portrayed in every movie and TV show that includes black woman leads.

But we’re not angry we are oppressed.

I like to think of it this way. There is a race/gender tier the first, the almighty power of all races and gender is the white male. The most privileged, they have the freedom everyone wants. The second in this tier is a white woman, they might not get everything they want due to being a woman but being white gets them most things. The third is a black man, the “gangsters” that are all criminals. Not only are they not able to get a job because of their skin color but they get shot by people because of their skin color. They lose the rest of their life because of the color of their skin. The fourth and final tier is a black woman. We are constantly disrespected, we have two things against us; being black and being a woman.

We get told on a daily basis that we’re “pretty for a black girl,” that we are white because we might like to listen to Justin Bieber, or people might assume that we’re not smart. We get made fun of because we might have big boobs, a big butt, and full lips.

We get stereotyped that we are loud because one black girl is loud all the time so all black girls are loud, or because we are angry we are unlovable and no one wants to be in a relationship with us. People make jokes about our hair, always asking if it weave and trying to touch is like we’re some kind of dog.

People stay doubting us.

But in reality, everyone knows including us black girls that we’re one of the strongest, intelligent, and beautiful human beings on earth.

We start trends while others follow; people are getting butt implants, and plastic boobs and lip injections to have the curves we are born with. People have wigs or “intentions” in their hair to make it longer; black girls started wearing cornrows and within the next month white girls were wearing them and calling them “boxer braids."

We were born to be leaders, and we are leaders. We work 100 times harder than others and we get what we need to do accomplished. We don't let all the negativity people say about us tear us down because we know it will never stop. We stand up straight with our head held high and brush off what people say about us because at the end of the day, we know that the only reason people are talking about us is that they know we are going to be something and that we might rule the world one day.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
