Dear Generations X, Y and Baby Boomers,
Stop hating on us young people, please! We are called things like selfish, entitled, lazy and privileged. We are just different from you and it was the same when you were our age. We have new technology, terminology and appreciation for different things. Just as you finally got a television we got smartphones. You got records we now have digital downloads. Times have changed. We are no longer in the industrial age where everyone should go and get a job, work for forty years, have a pension and you'll be fine. That's not the case anymore, we're moving into the information age where anyone can do anything with the use of the internet. Don't hate someone's decisions just because they didn't go to college and they're doing something different than the norm.
Yes, we're more progressive! A lot of the younger generation believes in things like a woman's right to choose, same-sex marriage, the legalization of marijuana etc. I'm not saying you can't have your opinions I'm just saying that we shouldn't receive so much negativity for it. I'm also not trying to make blanket statements about you guys either. We are moving in a more progressive direction and most of us youths are a part of it along with some older people like Tulsi Gabbard, Bernie Sanders, Rosario Dawson and George Takei.
A lot of this springs from the idea of making public colleges and universities tuition-free, raising the minimum wage and wanting to end the drug war and war in the middle east. For me, I'm not for the idea of making public universities tuition free or raising the minimum wage. What we should do is move forward on the Audit the Fed bill and stop printing money and teach kids personal finance from wealthy people and personal responsibility. We can't change the nation's economy until we learn how to take care of our personal economy. We are not all under this blanket of "We want our safe spaces, free this, free that and that everyone is racist." Labels only make things worse. And this goes both ways.
And yes, we like our phones, laptops and other devices. Why? The same reason you liked your first television set, record player, Walkman, Super Nintendo etc. We enjoy it. We're not all just tweeting, Snapchatting and taking pictures for Instagram. We're doing research for our class, reading articles in Forbes magazine and looking at the next car we're going to drive or apartments for rent for when we move out. We have advanced technology so don't shame us for using it.
These pictures above have some truth but also a lot of elitist ideas. Saying you're the better generation after we're doing the things you told us to do? You told us to go to school, get good grades so we can find a good job, make lots of money and we'll be successful. It's not the reality anymore! Things have changed! Not all of us are like this above picture and not all of you are like the top portion of the above picture. We just need to get over this.
This is just the beginning of opening up the conversation between older and younger generations. Especially with the election we see a very big divide between generations. That's what the politicians want to happen. The longer we argue in our hometowns the longer they can sit in Washington D.C. and collect our money as paychecks. It doesn't stop here we need to unite on one vision and stay the course. This country won't change in November, it changes when we change our minds and hearts.
