Dear Mom,

the thank you you've deserved for years

Dear Mom,
Hannah Moore

In honor of International Women's Day I wanted to write a thank you letter to the woman who raised me to be the person I am today.

Dear Mom,

I might not say it all the time but I want you to know how much I appreciate you and everything you've done for me. I know it wasn't easy to raise me almost by yourself, there were some pretty awful middle years where we fought a lot, but without you I would not be the strong and independent person I am today. The lessons you've taught me and things we've been through over the years have brought us both to where we are today and I want to thank you.

In 18 years you've taught me everything from how to tie my shoes to how to do my taxes. I can honestly say that because of you I was more prepared for college than 90% of the people in my graduating class. We both still have lots to learn, we still haven't figured out boys or how to stop stinkbugs from getting into our house, but because of you I've learned almost everything I need to survive on my own in the world.

You've always been there for me whether it was me calling you from college on the verge of tears because I'm stressed and homesick beyond belief or whether I just needed a good laugh. You supported me in everything I wanted to do and encouraged me to do things that I was passionate about. You taught me that my happiness is more important than anything else and I'm a happier person today because of it.

You've been there for my friends as well. They feel as if they can tell you anything and you'd never question them on it or form a bad opinion on them because of it. In a way you're their mother too. So many of my friends would like to thank you for being there for them when they felt like their mothers weren't or when they were too nervous to talk about things with anyone else. You always made them feel comfortable, you were a friend to them.

You have always been my friend over my mom and I thank you for that because sometimes I need a friend more. I know I can tell you anything and that you would never judge me for it. My friends never understood why I call you every day because our relationship is so different compared to most. My roommate even told me once that I talk to you like I talk to my best friends. Thank you for being my very best friend.

I know it wasn't always easy; we've been through hell and back together but, thank you for everything. For being my shoulder to cry on, my rock, my biggest fan, my best friend, my role model, and most importantly my mom. I wouldn't be who I am or where I am without you.

Love you always,

Your daughter

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
