Dear Mom: Thanks For Just Being You

Sometimes you just have to say "thank you" for the little things

Dear Mom: Thanks For Just Being You
Ariel Milewicz

Dear mom/mommy/mother,

Thank you for all the times you answer incessant text messages at ALL hours of the day. Thank you for answering my phones calls when I walk back from the library LATE at night, when I feel like procrastinating the studying I have, when I just feel like hearing your voice, when I need advice, or when I need to complain about something or someone.

Thank you for not judging me for calling you five times a day because I only have two or three minutes at a time. Thank you for not getting mad that if I don't have time to call you for a few days, you'll end up stuck on the phone with me for two hours. Thank you for answering my FaceTime calls (even though you don't necessarily know how to use FaceTime).

Thank you for letting me call you when I'm sick and all I want is to be lying on the couch at home with you taking care of me. Thank you for scheduling all of my appointments for me for when I come home over a break (because despite being a college student, I still can't call to schedule a flu shot by myself).

Thank you for texting me each morning when I wake up for class and every night before I go to bed (even though sometimes you text me before my alarm goes off for class). Thank you for reminding me that I should be going to the library after class is over rather than going back to my room and watching television or taking a nap.

Thank you for the nonstop questions (even when I tell you that you're really just nagging me). Thank you for the constant reminder that college isn't "summer camp" and that it's more important to be in the library than going out (even if I complain that it isn't fair that I have to study while everyone else gets to go and do something fun).

Thank you for discussing the latest episode of a television show with me even though you had to wait an extra 24 hours for me to catch up on it. Thank you for picking out clothing for me that you think I'll like and sending me pictures of it so

Thank you for reminding me it's okay to be stressed, that sometimes I can get into an argument with a friend, that when I come home for a school break all my favorite foods will be waiting for me, that my bed will be made with clean sheets, and that a fresh new towel will be waiting for me to shower as soon as I step off the plane.

Thanks for just being you!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
