Dear Media,
This weekend has been rather eventful in American politics. The inauguration of a new president, especially one as controversial as Donald Trump, has created a media storm for weeks. For the past three days, every social media platform has seemed to revolve around political opinions. In addition, every news outlet in America, and several from around the world, have provided minute-to-minute updates and various opinion pieces on the current political climate and new presidency. From the inauguration to riots to various Women's Marches, the media has been extremely busy this weekend. And it's been making me think.
I'm not writing this piece to insult the media, but rather to praise it. The presence of the media in America embodies our First Amendment right. It celebrates this great tradition by offering viewpoints from across the spectrum in a readily available format. It also allows those of us outside of DC to experience all the goings on in our political center. The fact that we are allowed to say what we want, whether that be through Facebook post or news article, is a beautiful, patriotic thing.
I'm also writing this piece to ask the media a favor. I'm asking that they cover all the news, with the same tenacity of what is going on right now. I'm asking not to remove opinion, but make sure to hear out both sides of the argument. I'm asking that we all listen to each other and celebrate the fact that the media exists, rather than blocking out what we don't want to hear.
See, it is easy to only view media outlets that align with your own beliefs. It is easy to shut off the TV, block friends on Facebook with different views, and remain naive. But in my opinion, it is BETTER to look at all sides of the issue. To educate yourself on the viewpoints of others. It makes you a better person and this world a safer, smarter place to live.
So I'm asking the media, and all of you who view it, to help me with this request. And to make a world that is BETTER not from blind following but educated discussion.
