To High School Seniors, Don't Rush It

As your childhood comes to a close, here are a few things I've learned in my first few weeks.

Dear High School Senior,

I can guarantee you're stressed out about life right about now. The school year has just begun and you're already having to deal with the stress of college essays. You are probably currently freaking out about what the future holds and what your life will be like in a year. I can let you in on a little secret, in a year, your life will be amazing.

In a year, you will be studying in a room over some topics you love, and topics you despise, but you will be surrounded by a new group of people who are all trying to make new friends and find their place in college. You will be in a totally new world, and you will grow in ways you cannot even imagine.

You are about to meet some of the people that will stay in your life forever which is kind of crazy to think about. I met some of my greatest friends because we got in an impromptu fight with free umbrellas. You never know when you'll find those people, but don't worry, they're coming.

When you get to college, you will find this new found freedom that you never imagined could be real, but in the words of Uncle Ben in Spiderman, "With great power comes great responsibility." You can choose when to study, what to eat, and who you want to hang out with.

Trust me, it is a great life to live, but you have to watch what you do. The first day I walked into the dining halls, I instantly wanted to eat every unhealthy food in sight. The dessert bar is my heaven, the number of starches they have in the meals will kill you, and the limited amount of fruit is real. My advice to you is eat your fruits and vegetables. SERIOUSLY. Try with every meal to at least eat something remotely healthy otherwise the freshman 15 will be a very real thing for you.

One final thing for you high school seniors is to enjoy every moment you have at home. I was never a fan of typical high school things like dances, football games, and the way things were taught, but the one thing these activities all have in common is they all create memories with people around you.

A lot of people you meet in high school you will not stay in contact with, that's just the way the world is, but that doesn't mean the memories will go away. Enjoy these last few months. My last semester of high school was by far my favorite because I met friends that I know I'll keep in contact with, and I started to slightly figure out what I wanted to do with my life. It will be hard to say goodbye to the home you’ve known for so long, it will be hard to say goodbye to your pets and furry friends, but most of all, it will be hard to say goodbye to your family.

Enjoy every moment with them because a year from now you’ll be sitting in a library in a new city, and possibly a new state, trying to figure out what you’re meant to do. And that, my friend, is a new adventure all on its own, but it will be here waiting when you’re done with high school. Don’t rush it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
