Dear Future Freshman Roommate

Here are some questions I have for you.

This is for all the incoming freshmen students who have a roommate randomly assigned to them...

Dear future roommate,

I do not know you yet, but I cannot wait for what adventures await us. I cannot wait to move into ______ dorm in a couple of weeks and meet you personally.

I do have a few questions to ask you.

1. What are some things you like to do?

For example: Do you like working out with a buddy or alone? What store do you like to shop at? What restaurant do you enjoy eating out at? Who is your favorite musician/band? What type of music do you like to listen to? What is your favorite movie? What do you like to do on a Friday/Saturday night? What is your favorite food/drink? Do you play an instrument/sing?

2. Will you be bringing a rug, couch/chairs, vacuum, brooms, cleaning supplies, a TV or a water pitcher (such as Brita)?

I know our dorm room has limited space, so I wanted to make certain that we weren't bringing too much. If you would like me to bring something for both of us to share, do not hesitate to ask.

3. What temperature during the summer and/or winter do you like the room to be at?

Do you mind if I open the windows during a cooler day (around 70 degrees outside or so)? Thermostat wars are no fun...

4. What time do you normally like to go to bed?

I do not want to disturb your slumber if I can help it.

5. Are you OK with me bringing guests/friends/significant others into the room?

If I do have a significant other, I will make certain that we tell you in advance when we will be hanging out in the room and we will make sure you feel welcome anytime.

6. Would you like one of us to vacuum/mop/sweep the room every week/two weeks?

We can fill in a schedule listing who does what during each weekend.

7. Would you rather have me ask your permission before borrowing a specific item that is yours?

8. What are some of your pet peeves? Better to know them sooner than later.

I hope that we can become best friends. If that does not happen, I will understand completely. I know that living with a complete stranger 24/7 for a whole school year is not easy. If you have anything you would like to talk to me about anytime during the school year, please do not hesitate to do so. I would like to be on the same page with you at all times so that we can get along with each other. The last thing I would like to experience is tension between both of us. Effective communication is key.

Sincerely,

Your name

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
