The journey you are about to embark on will set your life up for what it will turn out to be. No pressure, right?
I am being totally serious right now. Even though it is scary, it will be one of the most amazing things that can happen to you. I speak from experience when I say that choosing the right college, the right friends, and choosing daily the situations that can only build you up, will change you into the adult you are supposed to be.
College is a big deal –– a huge deal, and if you don’t make the right choice in where you go, you can potentially scar yourself from wanting to go to college ever again. It is freaking scary, but you can ask any college student that has ever lived and they will tell you they felt the same way. You are not along in this. Please don’t ever forget that. It may bring you to tears, but it is so worth choosing the right place to live the next four to five years of your life, and if you make the right choice, then it is all worth the stress you felt in the beginning.
I cannot tell you how important it is to find the right friends. Please, please, please do not put yourself in bad situations just because you got sucked into the wrong crowd. I know, I probably sound like a parents telling you all of these things, but I am being completely serious and stern about this one especially. If you find yourself in the middle of the wrong crowd and start making your choices based on what they are doing, you can potentially mess up everything you have worked so hard for thus far. It is not worth your future to go to that party. It is not worth your future to do that illegal drug. It is not worth your future to sleep around. It is not worth your future to get plastered every night of the week because “everyone else does it. So it must be fine." It is just not worth it.
You have to be smart in the choices you make every day because ultimately they determine your life. It’s not rocket science, but it can be hard. Who in the world thought it would be OK to send 18/19/20-somethings out into the world, on their own, to make such life altering decisions? I have no clue, but it’s real. It’s your life now. It can be scary, but it can be something great in the end –– if you really want it to be.
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.
