Dear Dorms, It's About Time We Broke Up

We've had a few good years, but it's time that I moved on.

Dear Dorms, It's About Time We Broke Up

Dear Dorms,

Hi, it's me. Over our past three years together, we've had some good times. But I've honestly gotten more and more annoyed with you, for multiple reasons.

1. The bathrooms

While you provide everything necessary for a bathroom, the whole "communal" aspect just isn't working out. I might sound privlaged, but I really do miss not having to wear shoes in the bathroom. Also, why is it that almost every year someone opens the curtain to the shower you're using?

2. Bugs

I don't know why, but every dorm I've lived in has had some sort of infestation issue that just never goes away. There's just something off putting about finding bugs in your room almost every week that's really off-putting.

3. Neighbors

Now, there's nothing wrong with living with other people. However, in the dorms, there's always that one neighbor you don't know at all who's super loud when you're trying to sleep.

4. So. Many. Rules.

Quiet hours. No candles. Limits on how many decorations you can have. While some rules are obviously there for a reason (no alcohol in your room if you're under 21), some just feel pointless.

5. Just wanting personal space.

Even if you're living in a single room, you never really feel like you have your own personal space in the dorms.

6. Missing cooking

Even though most dorm buildings have some sort of kitchen, there's something nice to have your own kitchen, especially since you can always be sure that it's clean.

7. Feeling intrusive

Whether it's walking into the bathroom while two people are having a hear-to-heart at midnight on a Saturday, or feeling like you should leave the room when your roommate is on the phone with their S.O., there are so many times in the dorms where you feel like you're intruding on people.

8. Living with someone can really try your patience.

Unless your roommate is your clone, there is a 100% chance that you will disagree with them at some point. When two people share a small room together, it's guarunteed that things will be tense sometimes.

9. Living next to someone in a hot-and-heavy relationship is the worst.

I'm glad you're in love, but please try to keep it down.

10. You need to learn about living on your own at some point.

From cooking your own food, to paying rent, there's a lot of things you don't learn about while living in dorms. While living on campus is nice, you do need to learn about living in the real world at some point, and experience taking care of your own house or appartment. After all, you can't stay in the dorms after you graduate.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
