Dear College Freshman

Don't bring every single last thing from your house

Let me tell you. there is absolutely not enough room in any dorm I believe for you to bring every clothing item you own. I suggest bringing clothes by the season. Start off with summer clothes then when go home for thanksgiving bring your winter but still have some summer clothes because if your college town is anything like Starkville it will still be 95 in October. then keep the cycle of clothes going.

Use a packing list

My packing list was a little extravagant thanks to my wonderful mother who makes sure I have every possible thing I might need. However, you don't need a full blown vacuum or every cleaning supply ever made. I say try to ask people who go to your college and see what they suggest. Also extension cords will be you best friend. The more the merrier. The beds are so tall that any regular cord won't even reach the top.

Don't room with your bestie

I have known way to many people who have lived with their best friend freshman year and they are no longer friends. It is better to choose someone who you may know and may run in the same circles with. That way you are familiar with them but at the same time won't ruin a life long friendship through the process. I did that and I had a great experience. Also try t be adaptable with them. try to understand that they may live a different lifestyle from you and that's okay.

Have fun and do new things

Freshman year is a time to reinvent yourself. High-school is a thing of the past now and its time for you to cut loose and be yourself and have fun. Go to the parties. Join a club. Join greek life if that's your thing. Make friends in your classes.

Text and call your family

I know for me at least I call my mom almost everyday. Trust me your parents really appreciate hearing from you, especially if your far away. And it always nice to just have someone to talk to if your plans of making friends isn't going your way at first. Being away from my parents has brought me so much closer to them. My parents are my best friends which is cheesy but true. So If you need a reminder to call your mom or dad this is it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
