5 Ways To Deal With Missing College

How many more months until we're back?

What do you miss more? The twin size bed? The communal bathrooms? The walk to classes, no matter the weather? These may seem to be the harsh realities of college when you first hear them, but as anyone who has experienced their share of time in an 11x15 dorm room will know, these little things are a part of what makes college so great. Granted, they aren't the best parts. They definitely can't beat having two hours of class a day, being free to be your own person or living with your best friends.

If you come home for summer break, it's easy to start to miss the lifestyle you grew accustomed to over the past nine months. It's a strange feeling, this college homesickness. It's also hard to figure out how to cope with it. It's easier to fix regular homesickness. A quick call to your family or a weekend trip home can do the trick. But how do you recreate college life when your dorm is sealed shut for the summer and your friends are across the country?

1. Visit your friends.

If your friends are close, then you're one of the lucky ones. Plan weekends where everyone can meet up and do something fun. Whether it's going to the beach, playing mini golf or having a barbecue in someone's backyard, it'll seem like the semester never ended. Or, if your friends live far away and you can get a few days off of work, take a quick plane ride to see them! (I know, easier said than done.)

2. Take a summer course.

I know, it's not what you thought of when you decided to recreate the semester. It might help, however, if you want to get ahead on your coursework or remind yourself how to meet deadlines.

3. Craft.

If you're in a sorority, the summer is a great time to get creative and make canvases that you can keep or give to your future little. Better now than during the semester when you're swamped with work.

4. Lose the freshman 15.

It's easy to be reminded of how many pounds your body added on when it's time to put on a bathing suit. Why not take all of that boredom out at the gym? Your body will thank you and, before you know it, you'll be back to eating that late night Domino's in no time.

5. Start planning your new room.

If you're feeling some sense of nostalgia for your dorm room, why not trick yourself into thinking you're creative by looking through other people's Pinterest? Whether or not you coordinate with your roommate(s) for your future room or apartment, it's always fun to daydream just a little bit. It'll bring you back to the memories you made during the previous year and make you even more excited for the new ones you will create.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
