"Deadpool 2" has arrived with kick-ass scenes, memes, some pretty hilarious jokes, real emotion, a diverse cast, and an estimated $125 million opening weekend. Deadpool is already a highly popular character and connects with fans, but the sequel brought us a unique look at the character and those who surround him. The movie's timeline brings us a lot on the table with an amazing "after-credit" scene, great music, and multiple references to X-Men, Avengers, Logan, and even Taylor Swift's cats. But under all the dubstep jokes, "Deadpool 2" is actually a pretty good movie, with memorable characters brought to life by a diverse cast and aspects of the film that can actually resonate with audiences.
Here's why "Deadpool 2" is pretty damn good:
Deadpool's backstory and feelings are explored
Deadpool's backstory is only slightly explained in the first movie and any emotion he has is about his scarred face and how people perceive him. In "Deadpool 2," he references his connection to special forces again, but during his brawl with Russel, he discusses his own crappy home life as a child. It's quick, but it's there. When he talks to Russel about the abuse that he is going through, Deadpool's emotions are heightened to the extent that he actually begins shooting those who have hurt Russel. Deadpool shouts "You can always tell" who's being abused and his emotion about the situation suggests he was in a similar situation.
The experience of grief is also explored. We see a darker side of Deadpool when Vennessa is killed but also a much more emotional side where Wade is going through his grief and blaming himself for her death. A point of the movie is to get Deadpool at his lowest point by taking away the only thing he cared about. There is a dispute of "fridging " in this, the trope in comics where the female characters suffer terribly to forward the hero's plot (that's something to talk about another time), but Deadpool's emotion gets across to the audience anyway. He wants to die when he cannot and eventually motivates him on. Deadpool also shows that even for guys, it's okay to cry and actually be upset.
The movie makes Deadpool to be more than just the "Merc with a Mouth" and an annoying clown, and that's not only the Deadpool fans love, but the one that deserves to be on the big screen.
"Family" as an F word
Another part of Deadpool's backstory is the idea that the word "family" is an "F Word." Deadpool opens saying this is a "family film" and it turns out to actually be one in the least expected way. Deadpool finds a family and friends, with Colossus, Cable, Domino, Russel, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, and even Yukio. It shows family in the least expected way and that it doesn't have to be blood-related or anywhere near perfect.
How someone can literally change a child's future
Vennessa's words of "kids give us a chance to be better than we were" echo throughout the movie as Deadpool races to stop Cable from killing a kid. He believes he can change the future for Russel, and in fact, he actually does! He proves that someone out there can care for Russel and with the change of Cable's teddy bear from dirty to clean, the movie shows how one person can literally change a child's future.
Sexuality is explored throughout
Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Yukio come out and casually say they are together. Why is this a big deal? They are the first LGBTQIA representation in the Marvel universe! Actually on the big screen! It's casual, no big deal, and treated like a normal relationship. "Deadpool 2" gives the representation the LGBTQIA community deserves by introducing an actual lesbian couple. Deadpool in the comics is also pansexual and although small, he makes subtle hints to other characters like Colossus or even Cable.
A diverse cast
"Deadpool 2" introduces a diverse cast and gives minorities the representation they deserve as well. As Zazie Beetz (who plays Domino) discusses "using all kinds of people who look all kinds of different ways can appeal to a mass audience." "Deadpool 2" has one of the most diverse superhero casts from race, sexuality, and body type.
Memorable characters
Although most of the X-Force died in a matter of minutes, we still have memorable characters like Domino, Cable, and Peter to entertain us. Domino takes control of the movie by being quite the badass woman and more than just a side character. Peter, aka sugar-bear, is the other only survivor as an every-day normal day. Cable comes from the future to avenge his family but sacrifices his only way home to save Deadpool and actually changes his mind by helping Russel instead of killing him.
There's plenty of reasons why "Deadpool 2" is amazing, but these are just some of the important ones. It's a change for superhero movies with the representation and Deadpool we both need and deserve.
