You’re allowed a break from reality. It sounds crazy, especially if you’re a teenager on the cusp of adulthood.
But really: feel free to allow your mind to wander.
I find that many of my peers fear daydreaming for the terrifying possibility of their illusions giving them false hope. I understand that, I truly do. How many times have I laid in bed in those sleepy minutes after hitting snooze only to find myself planning out my day in my head? I think of what I want to wear, eat, say, do, etc.
But it rarely comes to fruition the way I want it to—and sometimes that can be dangerous.
But those realistic visualizations aren’t the daydreams I’m talking about. Sure, everyone has them—they picture their future apartment, spouse, family, and career—but what about the truly outlandish thoughts?
Don’t pretend like you don’t know what I’m talking about. You’ve been there at least once, even if it was way back in your childhood. You dreamt of going to Hogwarts, or playing a specific role in a fairy-tale your little mind conjured up all on its own. As time went on, many outgrew this way of thinking.
But I’ve struggled to clutch onto it.
It’s a strange feeling to almost be a grown woman and daydreaming about fairytales or alternate universes. I often catch myself and think “Is this too unrealistic?” And that’s the thing: it totally is. That’s the point!
It’s okay to daydream. It’s okay to picture your ideal guy or girl and imagine what your first date will be. It’s okay to daydream about being a hero, or the person who needs saving—it’s your head, and whatever you think belongs entirely to you. You shouldn’t feel ridiculous for dwelling in your own thoughts.
For that matter, allow the “realistic” dreams to push through as well. Even if they’re unlikely to come true (I mean, what are the chances I’ll find a one-bedroom in Chelsea for under $1,000?), enjoy them. Live and thrive in the world you’ve created for those five minutes in the elevator or the thirty-minute train ride.
