Now that spring break has come and gone, the sweet freedom of summertime has tickled all of our feet. We are all ready for late nights, unplanned adventures, and a backpack full of maps and snacks instead of textbooks.
I know that one of the most unpopular opinions I carry is that the spring semester is better than the fall semester simply because there are no weekend obligations! No football games or anything, Saturdays are for the adventures, and this is so sweet to me!
Just because there are roughly eight weeks left in the semester shouldn't stop you from diving deep into the endless weekend day trip possabilities!
Living in College Station, we are in the most ideal spot possible for a quick weekend getaway. Trust me, I know just as good and well as the next person sometimes you just have to get up and leave. So what's stopping you?!? Here are eight day trips ready to be enjoyed by you and your people!!!!
1. Waco
Waco is only an hour and a half drive from College Station and it has plenty to give! Most famously, it's home to Magnolia Market, a photogenic sugar high just waiting to happen. There's Common Grounds, doubling as some of the best coffee Texas has to offer and a small concert venue. Waco is also home to Cameron Park, a gorgeous state park that is also right next to the Waco Zoo! Good luck getting all of this done in one day! This trip definitely comes with bonus points because The Aggie Barn is on the way there and back!
2. Austin
SSSSSSS, I know right? But hear me out. We've got a lot to choose from after making this short two hour drive. First and foremost, the state capitol. Go ahead and take a selfie in front of that. Next, we all need to make a quick stop to Graffiti Park at Castle Hill because word on the street is it's about to be demolished!! Austin is also PACKED full of museums for your viewing pleasure. There's Blanton Museum of Art, Museum of the Weird, Texas Memorial Museum, and Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum just to name a few. If you'd rather be on the nature side of things there's the Austin Zoo, the Austin Aquarium, Zilker park and Botanical Garden, the Austin 360 Bridge, the famous "I love you so much" wall, and McKinney Falls State Park. Not to mention all the good eats. I've heard (and experienced) nothing but good things about the food truck situation.
3. Dallas
At a little over three hours, Dallas is the longest drive from College Station on this list, but as a biased resident, let me assure you it's well worth the drive. We've got the Dallas Museum of Art, The Dallas Zoo, The Dallas World Aquarium, White Rock Lake, Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza (legacy of JFK), Perot Museum of Nature and Science, Klyde Warren Park, Dallas Holocaust Museum, and a ton of rockin' concert venues like The Granada Theatre (personal fave) and South Side Ballroom if you're looking to fulfill a groupie dream or two. Dallas is absolutely beautiful! Yes I'm bias but yes I'm telling the truth!!!
4. Inks Lake State Park
First of all, wow. Second of all, wow. Clocking in at just under three hours away, this State Park will literally take your breath away. All you crunchy granola Liberal Arts Majors are definitely going to want to make this drive. Inks is perfect for hiking, they have a total of nine miles in trails. You can also rent canoes, kayaks, and paddle boats, and swim where there's lifeguards. If you want this to be more than a day trip they have 200 campsites and 22 cabins! The possibilities are endless for this adventure.
5. Galveston
Let's go to the beach-each, let's go get away! For two hours and 40 minutes we can! Galveston is obviously a beach, so this adventure is pretty self explanatory. There's also the Moody Gardens, Schlitterbahn if you're feeling fancy, and Galveston Island Historic Pier. Get your tan on, drink a beverage out of a fruit, and remember the beach is one of the BEST places to watch the sun rise and set.
6. Davy Crockett National Forest
Davy Crockett National Forest is exactly two hours away from Cstat, and is absolutely gorgeous. There's about 20 miles worth of trails, picnic and camping sites, and plenty of wildlife. Same crunchy granola Liberal Arts Majors rules apply.
7. San Antonio
This trip is a three hour drive south of College Station. San Antonio is home of the Alamo, so go ahead and add that to the list of buildings you need to take a selfie in front of. San Antonio also has the beautiful River Walk, a Zoo, Botanical Garden, Six Flags, and SeaWorld. Not to mention Tex Mex. I would drive three hours just for Tex Mex. Queso is very important to me.
8. Houston
At an hour and forty minutes, given the right playlist, you'll be in Houston in no time! Houston is home of the Johnson Space Center, Houston Zoo, Museum of Fine Arts Houston (I have successfully and accidentally broken into this museum if you need tips), Houston Arboretum and Nature Center, Museum of Natural Science, Downtown Aquarium, Contemporary Arts Museum, and, if you are in a relationship you would like to get out of without doing the actual breaking up part, Houston is home of the National Museum of Funeral History! You can either A, vocalize so much dark humor your SO bolts, or B, they'll be so bored they'll bolt on their own! Problem solved! Houston also has the crown jewel White Oak Music Hall, an amazing concert venue for more of your groupie needs.
Adventure is most definitely out there and Texas, being huge and all, has a lot of it to offer. College is such a weird time, but it is a time of freedom!!! Grab your friends, a camera, the best playlist ever, and get going! The world is your oyster, and I prefer my oysters in the form of travel.
