Much conversation regarding mental health and awareness of such has been brewing as a result of rapper Kid Cudi’s recent decision to check into rehabilitation. Tweets filled with support have been composed in hopes to encourage not only the rapper, but others to consider their mental health. In light of such (and I mean light because to make such a decision is to acknowledge an enormous amount of strength) I’ve begun talking to those that’re most kindred to my heart regarding the importance of both mental and spiritual health.
The importance of self-awareness. For without knowing yourself, it is impossible to know your worth. When considering your worth it is important to first develop what it is you identify as being your nature? By nature I mean what is the Genesis of your entity, the essence of it all in which your foundation is based upon. What are your roots? It is in my opinion that we’re spirit first, and all others facets such as humanity, ethnicity, career path and etc. follow.
We are entities outside of our physicality meaning our soul realm is beyond what we can physically apprehend, especially in times of extreme measures. Robert Frost once wrote “The best way out is always through” and in great consideration of wellness such a quote couldn’t ring truer. Often times we try to escape rather than allow ourselves to be completely vulnerable to our pain. Our society as a whole is inundated with vices. Vices of all sorts are available to us, based off our preference and what we can afford. Each time we allow ourselves to find a momentary “out” versus allowing ourselves to “enter in”, we once again deny ourselves the opportunity to get through.
I had to ask myself, how often is it that I make an effort to dig “deep” with ones I love the most. Inquiring of their emotional and mental state. Reminding them of the importance of choosing their health as a priority rather than as an afterthought; just as I too need the reminder. As a community we don’t pry with righteous intent nor is it common a practice to acknowledge our personal emotional baggage, allowing vulnerability to have its proper place within our lives. By ignoring such we ultimately discourage progression in regards to our knowledge of self and self-worth. “To know yourself is to love yourself” and to know yourself is to place health as a priority, remembering that what one priorities one shall have. In an open letter Cudi wrote a desire that was extremely profound and worth implementing as a reminder to the promise life has for all of us; in which I quote “I deserve to have peace. I deserve to be happy and smiling. Why not me?” May you always ask yourself “why not me?” when the waves of anxiety begin to hold you hostage to your present terror, and may you always keep the desires of what you deserve in the forefront of your minds. Always mindful that you are of spirit first, so all that is established within life can be mastered.
Grace and peace to Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi, and all that are in the process of recovery, may we grow from their strength to always go through”
