Date Night With A Twist

One of the best things about being in a relationship is getting to go on dates with your significant other. As a college student, I've come to enjoy the idea that almost anything you do with your person you can be considered a date (because most of the time you're both too broke to go on a actual date). Take out? Date. Movie/Netflix and cuddles? Date. Cooking for each other? Most definitely a date. Spending time with the person you love is better than anything in the world, no matter what you're doing. With that being said, I've compiled a list of different dates from mine and Kendall's 'date night jar' that can be really helpful to those looking for something inexpensive, new, or just creative.

Free dates:

Watch a sunrise or sunset together -- Personally my favorite because I'm obsessed with them.

Set up an eno/hammock -- Just sitting outside and enjoying each other's presence sounds pretty great, while also trying not to fall out.

Study date -- This one happens more often than not but it's still pretty great. You get to spend time together while getting your work done and it's always helpful to have another person around incase you don't understand something.

Disney movie night -- Who doesn't like to have a Disney marathon?

Fishing -- This is one that me and Kendall use a lot because we basically have the river in my backyard and he's obsessed with fishing so it's a great way to spend a saturday or an afternoon together.

Scavenger hunt -- I haven't tried this one yet but it seems pretty fun. You compile a list of random things together and then walk around the city trying to find them all.

Puzzle -- Get a 200 piece puzzle and have at it.

Netflix -- Always the go-to date. A fun thing to do is to start a new show together and only watch it together so no one is ever ahead of one another.

Camp out in the living room -- Making a blanket fort together is one of the best ways to relive your childhood.

Picnic -- I wouldn't recommend this one anytime soon because you'll either die from the heat or you'll get carried away by mosquitos.

Riverwalk -- I love walking on the riverwalk in the afternoon and just enjoy nature together. (Plus we always pass at least 5 people with their dogs so that's the best thing ever.) If you're not in Columbia then try out a nature walk or trail near you!

Board games -- or Uno, but only when you're very secure in your relationship or else it might not make it through the competitiveness.

Cheap or inexpensive dates:

Farmer's market -- This is such a fun idea because you get the chance to meet local businesses, get fresh, yummy food, and spend the day together.

Museum -- Always a good choice but you might have to travel a little if you don't have one near you. If you're in Columbia I hear that the children's museum is even more fun than you would think.

Zoo -- You also might have to travel a little for this one but it'd be sooo worth it! I would also suggest waiting for the weather to cool just a bit so you're not sweating your butts off. (plus it won't be quite as busy)

Dinner out -- Dinner doesn't even have to be fancy, go to your favorite local place, get a burger and fries, and just enjoy each other. I would even consider going to sonic and eating in the car as a good dinner out idea.

Coffee date -- This one doesn't work so well for me since Kendall doesn't like coffee (I honestly don't know how we get along) but most coffee places have plenty of different options and it's always nice to just sit together and talk in a quiet place or even read books.

Ice cream or Pelican's date -- Quite honestly my favorite idea because I just LOVE ice cream or Pelican's. (please don't make me choose) If you've never had Pelican's TRY IT, it's so good and cheap and makes for the perfect date.

Takeout and Redbox -- The perfect twist on a classic movie and dinner if you want to stay in that night.

Second 1st date -- Kendall and I have this one at least once a month because our first date involved Hibachi House, our favorite restaurant, and we just honestly can't go too long without it.

Art gallery -- If you don't actually enjoy looking at art it's still pretty fun to go together and make fun of stuff and pretend to dissect the meaning.

Bowling -- Highly recommend, but the same as board games, only if you're confident that you can be competitive without breaking up.

A dessert-only date -- Seriously, who wouldn't love this idea?

Cookout milkshakes -- If you're like me then you're always down for a cookout milkshake. Highly recommend the peach or any of the cheesecakes. You're welcome.

Planning required dates:

Go to a festival -- Such a fun idea and if you want to go to one soon there's supposed to be a lantern festival in Charlotte sometime, the only reason we're not going is because football season...duh.

Surprise visit home -- As college students I think this is a pretty great idea because it's so unexpected, you get to spend time with your family and significant other, and you get a small break from school.

Day in Charleston/the beach -- Some planning is required for this one, and some money, but it's a great idea and can also be a surprise date if you want!

Go fruit-picking at a farm -- Apple season will be upon us very soon, along with pumpkins and other fall things. You could also save this idea for the summer months and go strawberry, peach, and blueberry picking. 10/10 would recommend.

Drive-in movie -- This is going to require some planning because there's only a few of these left. But if you're in Columbia there's a drive in a little bit away called the Big Mo, I would definitely look into it.

Pedicures -- I don't care what guys say, they WILL enjoy a nice pedi.

Aquarium -- Definitely some planning required as the only ones in South Carolina are at the beach or Charleston, but who doesn't like going to the aquarium? Worth it.

Concert -- This could be local or big name, free or tickets required, famous or never heard of, concerts are always a good idea.

You definitely don't have to be a [broke] college student to use these date ideas, they're great for all ages! If you have any personal favorites that aren't listed comment and let me know your ideas.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
