For 11 NFL seasons, Darrelle Revis dominated the defensive side of the ball. The 33-year-old cornerback called it a career Wednesday the 18th. Revis, a 7-time Pro Bowler, made his announcement on Twitter. His remarkable career made him one of the best defenders of his generation. There was a time before age caught up with him, he was the most feared cornerback the league had seen in a long time. He was revered among coaches and opponents. Revis Island truly defined the term "shutdown corner", a term that is used too loosely in today's NFL.
Revis was the first-round pick of the New York Jets in 2007 out of the University of Pittsburgh. The 14th overall pick started all 16 games his rookie year and would go on to four Pro Bowls his first six years with the Jets. In 2013 Revis was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He signed a massive $96 million contract but was later released after the 2013 season. In 2014, the 4-time first team All-Pro signed a one-year deal with the New England Patriots, breaking the hearts of Jets fans in the process. Revis helped the Patriots win Super Bowl XLIX against the Seattle Seahawks. It would mark his first and only Super Bowl title.
In 2015 The Patriots did not resign Revis. The Jets resigned him to a $70 million contract. After the 2015 season, Revis was selected to his 7th and final Pro Bowl. In 2016, it was obvious Revis lost a step. He wasn't the same corner everyone feared. The Jets released him following the 2016 season. In 2017, Darrelle Revis signed with the Kansas City Chiefs. He only appeared in six games with the Chiefs including the playoffs. The Chiefs released him on February 8th, 2018.
There is no debate, Darrelle Revis will one day be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Widely considered the best cornerback of his era, Revis garnered respect from opposing quarterbacks, receivers, and offensive coordinators. Despite a slow finish to his career, his 11 years in the NFL will remain a masterpiece among elite defenders. When scouts prepare for the NFL Draft, they're looking for the next shutdown corner, they're looking for the next Revis Island.
