As someone who has suffered from migraines for years, I decided a few months ago to go out and get a Daith piercing, also known as "the headache piercing." Supposedly this piercing punctures a certain spot in your ear that brings extreme relief to migraine sufferers. Honestly, I was extremely skeptical about this and didn't really think it was going to work, but having migraines has taken over so much of my life that I decided to give it a try anyway.
The overall process of getting it pierced was very painless, in my opinion. It was quick and easy. I sat up in a chair, the piercer made sure that I saw him get all of the tools that he needed and my jewelry out of the sterile packaging, he cleaned my ear, clamped the area to give him more control, and slid the needle through. I felt some pressure for a few seconds but nothing I would consider painful at all. He slid the jewelry through and it was all finished in around 30 seconds. It definitely looks like it would be more painful than it is. It is really not that bad and once it was done and the healing process began it still did not hurt me at all. I actually kept forgetting that it was even there for the first week.
After having this piercing for months I can say that it has greatly decreased both my migraines and my headaches (yes, migraines and headaches are two completely different things.) I used to get migraines all the time, and when I got them I couldn't function. As soon as I felt a migraine coming on, I knew that I was going to have to cancel all of my plans for the day and just lay in complete darkness all day long. I even have prescription medication for my migraines, which do help with making my migraines feel less intense...but even with taking the medication I would still be out of commission for an entire day.
Now if I do get a migraine (which has rarely happened since I got this piercing), it is no longer an all day ordeal. I still will take my medication and lay down but it is nothing like it once was. After a little while of laying down and resting, I am normally able to get up and function. So it did not completely eliminate my migraines, but just the fact that they have decreased so much has changed the way that I live my life. I no longer have to cancel all of my plans for the day. I don't have to completely call off work or miss all of my classes just because of my migraines. It has also seemed to help with my headaches. Before I got this piercing, I almost always had a very dull headache if I didn't have a migraine. Now, I wake up in the morning and I feel fine the majority of the time.
So I think it is quite obvious that I would completely recommend this piercing to anyone who suffers from migraines or headaches. Thanks to the whole 30 seconds it took to get this done, I have less to worry about now when I wake up in the morning. I can now focus on school, work, etc. while being pain free. It was completely worth it and if I could go back, I would have tried this much sooner than I did.
