For a lot of people, Valentine’s Day is just a reminder that they don’t have a special someone and it makes the day super not fun. That used to be me, until this year, when I realized something important. I have always had a Valentine, my dad. He was my first Valentine, my favorite and I know he’ll forever be my Valentine. Thanks for always showing me a little extra love on Valentine’s Day, Daddy. Here’s why having your dad as your Valentine is the best.

1. They know what you like

Every year my dad gets me a heart-shaped box of chocolates and a bouquet of daisies (my favorite flowers). The little extra thought he puts into making Valentine’s Day special for me was always enough to make me forget that I was feeling sad to be single.

2. They give the best hugs

There’s nothing like getting a big hug from your dad, especially on Valentine’s Day when it’s easy to feel lonely. The comfort of my Dad’s arms sends me right back to being a little girl and for a second, all my problems go away.

3. Their love is unconditional

Dads don’t expect their daughters to give them anything on Valentine’s Day. Their main objective is to make their daughters feel special and loved, no strings attached.

4. Their love is an example

Having your dad as your Valentine should show you how any guy, who may be your Valentine in the future, should treat you. If your Valentine doesn’t match up to the level of your dad on Valentine’s Day, tell him to take some notes and do better.

5. They make you feel like a princess

The relationship between a daughter and her dad is unique and so full of love. Dads always provide a shoulder to cry on, strong words of advice, protection when needed and limitless love. A dad always knows how to lift his daughter up and Valentine’s Day gives him an excuse to spoil her a little extra.

Next time you’re feeling lonely and find yourself wallowing in self-pity about being single on Valentine’s Day, don’t forget that you have, have always had, and always will have had a spectacular Valentine in your dad.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
