One of my favorite comedy films of all time is "The Other Guys." There is so much to love about this film. The cast was incredible, consisting of notable names such as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson, Steve Coogan, and so many more.
But I think that everyone went to see the movie for Detective Terry Hoitz and Detective Alan Gamble, aka Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell, respectively. The dynamic in this duo was perfect! You have the bad cop, Terry, who is short-tempered with lots of issues. Then there’s Alan, a “detective” who is the happy and gullible cop who has an interesting personality.
I could honestly dive deep into the story and the best parts of this film, but that is not what I am here to talk about today. No. Instead, I am here to talk about my disappointment with Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg. Why? Well, because they changed their minds on a sequel to the film. Instead, they thought a new franchise would be the best way to go. However, the duo thought it was a good idea to turn in their badges for macaroni art.
I’m talking about the atrocity we know as "Daddy's Home." The idea of this film wasn’t a bad idea. It was basically Wahlberg and Ferrell having power struggles to win over the affection of their kids/stepkids. The film just had a great deal of clichés and was not the best way to portray the Wahlberg and Ferrell dynamic.
I won’t bore you with the details, but the film was poorly received and for good reason. I personally thought the movie was mediocre, but was very upset when I found that it was a replacement to the alleged sequel for "The Other Guys."
What makes this worse is that "Daddy's Home" is getting a sequel instead. It also isn’t going to focus on the duo’s interactions, but instead with their character’s own fathers. Dusty’s (Mark Wahlberg's) father will be played by Hollywood's favorite psycho, Mel Gibson, while Brad’s (Will Ferrell's) father will be portrayed by John Lithgow.
So to recap, "The Other Guys," which did very well at the box office and received a critical acclaim, did not get a sequel, yet "Daddy’s Home," a mediocre comedy, gets one. I understand both franchises are from different studios, but I was hoping that the actors would know better than to be involved in this if it failed the first time. I believe that if a movie is successful enough, it may be an option to create a sequel. But "Daddy’s Home" just isn’t one of those movies.
"Daddy’s Home 2" is getting a November 10th, 2017 release date. While I hope that this film outdoes its predecessor, I really find it doubtful considering that sequels of movies are usually only as good as their original work. Who knows? Maybe I’ll be proven wrong.
