On Tuesday, Sept 5th, 2017, Trump made the most heartless decision a president could have, by far, made. He announced that the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), a program that has aided millions of undocumented youth who had ended up in the United States by no fault of their own.
The more I think about it, the more disgusted I feel about Trump. I am not one to take too much of a political stance, but enough is enough.
Growing up in a border town populated with many immigrants, I have seen how deportation can tragically tear a family apart. I have also met a lot of undocumented youth who are some of the most hard working civilians.
They do not steer away from challenges that allow them to succeed. Most of them want to do right by their parents that have risked their lives to give them a better life.
They look for work, education, and anything that will make them feel part of something bigger than themselves. From those I have met, undocumented youth are always trying to give back to the country that has given them so much. They were brought to this country without a say and suddenly they are just going to be stripped of their rights?
For many, being an American is the only lifestyle they have ever known.
DACA does more than just keep them in the land of the free. It gives them the opportunity to live a life of rights rather than a lifetime of fear.
Living through DACA is a way of life where they feel relatively safe from deportation. Although life is still hard for them. They have to renew their permit every two years and that is not cheap.
Stripping these respectful and lawful individuals of their everyday lives and family is so inhumane and uncalled for. If they aren't criminals and all they are trying to do is live a life they have as well as work hard, what is the harm in them continuing their journey in this country?
In the long run, successfull youth like DACA holders would be such a great addition to the professional world. Let's hope that Congress fixes the problem before the president goes all the way through with this ridiculous law because the future of the DACA holders should not be jeopardized for something they had no say in.
