Passion is one of the most important qualities for a successful entrepreneurship or for a successful life. Over the past few years, it has been declared the secret to success in almost everything which, at first, thought, does seem correct -- and it is for those who are passionate about something. However, for people who do not know what they are passionate about, this can be a big problem.

But please do not fear, here are five steps to conquer your problem as noted by Steven Kotler in his article for Forbes, "The Passion Recipe: Four Steps to Total Fulfillment." Before we delve into these five steps, I want to clearly define why passion is so important that it is declared the magic pill to success. The reason is quite simple.

In Kotler's words, "It’s a profound focusing mechanism. We pay more attention to those things we believe in."

This focused attention drives performance increases productivity and triggers a flow which serves to only further increase both performance and productivity. Flow is one of the most addictive states on earth. It is known that anything that continuously generates that state automatically has us humans running after it. Basically, flow over time is the basic recipe for passion.

So, how do you find out what you are passionate about? Here are Kotler's sweet and simple steps.

Step One: Make a list.

Get out a pen and paper or open up your Notes app on your phone and make a list of at least 25 things you are curious about. "Curious" doesn't entail a crazy list of crazy ideas that would take your whole life to accomplish (but I won't stop you!), rather a list of things you are curious about that can create an interest in reading a few books on the topic or talking to an expert on. However, the technique here is to be as specific as you possibly can.

Step Two: Hunt for intersections.

Here's where it starts to make more sense. Look at your list and see where your ideas intersect. You see, Kotler points out that curiosity is not enough to create passion -- there simply isn't enough energy to create a life-changing stir in you. The passion isn't enough to make you focus or for you to commit. Rather, you should look for three or four items on your list that intersect with each other.

The idea is that when the items on your list intersect, you create a pattern recognition -- the linking of ideas together -- which our brains love! When our brain recognizes a pattern it releases a neurochemical called dopamine which is an essential ingredient for cultivating passion. Dopamine has three critical tasks. Firstly, it is a focusing chemical which enhances learning and drives progress.

Secondly, a small release of dopamine leads to more pattern detection, creating a feedback loop. When dopamine is released the first time we detect a link between ideas, and that same dopamine leads to us detecting more links. This is the essence behind why creative ideas tend to spiral -- one good idea leads to another then another and yet another!

Thirdly and lastly, dopamine is a "feel-good" drug which is the brain's principle reward chemical, and can be extremely addictive. This addiction is your key to passion. It puts you on a cycle to do more with your passion.

Step Three: Play.

Once you've got an intersection, you get to play with it! Set aside 15 to 20 minutes a day for that topic, whether it is through listening to lectures, watching videos, reading articles, and/or reading books. Feed your curiosity daily! Kotler explains, "When you advance your knowledge a little bit at a time, you’re giving your subconscious a chance to process that information."

Your brain will start to look for more connections, which will, in turn, create more patterns, which will in turn create more dopamine, which will in turn create more motivation, which will ultimately create expertise. Gaining some expertise allows you to understand the history which serves as an intellectual framework for all of your ideas. These ideas will organize into a framework which you can build with newer ideas.

Step Four: Go public.

Once you've developed your ideas, it's now time to go out there and discuss them with the public to -- fingers crossed -- get positive feedback. However, until you feel like you are educated enough on the topic and feel sure enough to add to the dialogue, do not go out there yet. Feeling like a beginner and being treated like a beginner will neither be fulfilling nor will it be passion cultivating. Having public successes with your own work will only lead to more success.

Step Five: Turning passion into purpose.

In his book, "Bold," Kotler explains the premise behind why there needs to be a purpose behind your passion. Passion is a selfish experience which leaves little to no room for other people. Without a purpose, you cannot build businesses around your passion.

To find that purpose, get out another piece of paper or open up a new note. Make a new list of 10 to 15 massive global problems in the world you want to be solved. After all, the world's vastest problems are the world's most immense business opportunities!

Good luck to you all!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
