When American Horror Story first came out, I was too young to watch it. Not even my parents watched American Horror Story when it seemed like the entire world was watching it. I desperately wanted to watch it as a horror and Connie Britton fan. When I was a freshman in high school, American Horror Story came out with their third season, Coven. It has everything I liked, witches, the cool part of the south, some humor... it was everything I loved. My parents let me watch it because I was in high school and could handle whatever they showed, thus began me buying the first and second season for Christmas and binging them when Coven was on it's break.
We got Netflix that summer and I kind of regretted buying the first two seasons on DVD when Netflix had them, but looking back I'm glad I bought them. Murder House and Asylum are easily the best seasons. Coven was good but it was a little hard to take serious and moved in a weird pace. Freakshow was just sad and didn't use the characters well. Hotel had Lady Gaga but all of the guys looked the same and I just couldn't hang. I didn't even bother with Roanoke, which is a thing that I regret because I hear it was good.
I thought I was done with American Horror Story. That the show I spent late nights obsessing over in high school was as apart of my past as much as high school itself. Lo and behold came the teasers for Cult. When I learned more about the season, I realized I need to watch the show again.
The first episode premiered when I was at school. It was a Tuesday night and I didn't feel guilty about staying up late because my Wednesday class didn't start until 12:30. A few people from my floor met up in the lounge and we all watched it on the TV. Now that it's two weeks into the semester and I have hours and hours of homework, I struggle to find the time to watch it.
Making the time to watch the show is totally worth it though because in all honesty, this is the best season yet.
Unlike Coven, Cult is able to take scary and funny and mash it together so it works. In a time where humor is very much needed, especially tasteful political humor (you know... humor that doesn't involve Sean Spicer being the Good Guy now). Cult makes fun of everyone the election affected, the liberals and conservatives alike. Being liberal, I think it's super funny how Sarah Paulson's character is blaming most of her struggles on the election (even though she voted for Jill Stein). We can't forget the iconic moment when Kai (played by Evan Peters) blended Cheetos and did his best Trump impression in his mirror, seriously, give the dude an Emmy. Billy Eichner is a brilliant addition to the show, he's honestly such a breath of fresh air.
Another new addition that totally blew me away was Billie Lourd. Her character Winter is probably one of the more interesting ones I've seen on the show since Taissa Farmiga did our nation a favor and participated in the show. Her spooky, goth nanny look is inspiring and the deviance that comes with that look and personality is enough to make anyone keep watching the show. What catches me off guard is just how much she looks like her mom, Carrie Fisher. I hope to see a lot more of Billie Lourd in future seasons of American Horror Story as well as literally everything.
The plot of the show just works. It's real, the things that happen in the show (minus the freaky clowns to an extent) are very real, just dramatized slightly more. Being born and raised and unhappy in Michigan, this show freaks me out even more because they just name drop cities I've spent time in and have family in. It makes the experience of watching the show 10 times cooler. This must be how people from New York and California feel when they watch everything else on TV. I think part of the reason why it works so well in Michigan is because Michigan is crazy enough to do something like this. I swear, I've seen Kai-like people everywhere before the show even started. If a cult influencer is going to take any state, it's probably going to be here, we're pretty impressionable.
I really hope that nothing in the next few episodes ruins my adoration for this season. I don't want to write another article retracting every statement made in this article but if I have to, I will. Lena Dunham is coming folks, I don't know I have the willpower to survive her on screen.
