When You Give A Girl An Older Cousin

You're no longer the older one when you're together.

When You Give A Girl An Older Cousin
Elizabeth Ballin

When you give a girl an older cousin it shows her what having an older sister would have been like.

The staying up all night and gossiping. The sisterly fights that would have happened. The ability to go to someone for advice that isn't mom.

When you give a girl an older cousin, it shows her what not having to be solely responsible feels like.

What not having to do everything perfectly because you've got younger sisters who look up to you.

Not having to be the scapegoat for everything because your parents saw some of it with your cousin.

When you give a girl an older cousin, you give her someone to look up to and admire.

Sure she likes it that her sisters see her as a role model, but what about a role model for her?

That position goes to the cousin.

When you give a girl an older cousin, you give her something to look forward to in potential family reunions.

From the stories of the two of you as kids to "sneaking" wine at your sister's Quince,

having an older cousin means no event is boring.

When you give a girl an older cousin, you give her someone to visit.

Whether less than an hour away when they're kids or on separate ends of the country as adults,

the weekends of vacations spent together are always worth waiting for.

When you give a girl an older cousin, you give her someone to learn from—mistakes and all.

You push the girl to be the best that she can.

When you give a girl an older cousin, you give her not just a cousin, but a sister. Someone to laugh with. Someone to fight with. Someone to lean on when you don't know where else to go. You give her someone to depend on.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
