U.S. Senator, Cory Booker (D-NJ), ran for re-election during the midterm elections on Nov. 4. He beat his Republican opponent, Jeff Bell, in the election with 56 percent of the vote to Bell's 42 percent. Senator Booker has been in office since 2013, after winning a special election to be successor to Senator Frank Lautenberg, who passed earlier last year.
Booker became the center of attention in politics while serving as mayor of Newark before he ran for the Senate. He is famously known for shoveling snow from the driveways of Newark residents, running 5Ks all over the state, saving his neighbors from their burning house, and being a Twitter sensation. On The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Stewart recently referred to Booker as a "superhero."
Booker's Twitter account is currently followed by almost 1.5 million Twitter users. Compared to Texas Senator, Ted Cruz, who only has about 371,000 followers. Booker utilizes Twitter to connect with his New Jersey community. More recently, he has started posting selfies with people he meets. It seems like getting a selfie with Senator Booker is becoming a trend. It begs the question, are you even from New Jersey if you don't have a picture with Cory Booker?
Now, what should we expect from Booker in years to come? Recently, there have been rumors that he is a potential vice presidential Democratic candidate in the upcoming 2016 election. Booker shut down those rumors by saying he would not be running for president or vice president in 2016 and is dedicated to being New Jersey's senator for the next six years. With that being said, Booker could be ready to run for president or vice president in 2020.
Whether it is all an act or he is genuine, Booker is the epitome of a public servant. He vocalizes often that his job is to help people. He has proved that over and over again with his efforts in New Jersey. Booker said that his goal for the next six years is to get the economy to "thrive again." Along with that, Senator Booker is hoping to get started on a new rail tunnel under the Hudson.
I have been following Cory Booker for over six years, now, when I was still going to high school in Florida. Political party aside, Senator Booker's ability to make himself known across the country with his public service and interactiveness on social media makes him a very powerful candidate in whatever race he decides to run.
