Throughout the year, we look forward to Christmas. It is America's favorite holiday! So the day after Halloween, Christmas decorations are already being displayed in stores along with heavy advertisement. But what about Thanksgiving? We are so quick to skip over the turkey to Christmas, we forget the all exciting events associated Thanksgiving and holiday season.
If you turn on the TV or sit through enough YouTube videos, you will come across advertisements that tell you to “buy this before it’s gone” or to "hurry and catch this sale!” It’s in your face all the time. When you go to the store there are holiday sales on Christmas lights and stocking stuffers not even twenty-four hours after Halloween…
As a young child I looked forward to Christmas as soon as it was over. I had made Christmas list, and circled stuff in the Toys R Us gift catalogs they sent every year to my house around November. I thought Thanksgiving was cool because I got off from school. But I didn’t really care about it because it wasn’t as interesting as my Toys R Us catalog.
Now that I am older and much more mature, I still love Christmas and as far as I’m concerned…Santa Claus is very much real. But it is the consumerism that comes with holiday season that makes me cringe. The meaning of Christmas seems to be buried under countless BOGOs and sales coupons. I personally know some people who are more excited to see their gifts then their families when coming home from college.
The same argument goes into Black Friday. Not even twenty-four hours after Thanksgiving, Americans feel obligated to shop for the best deals and put up their Christmas trees, and belting Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” before Thanksgiving is even over. It’s like there is a nation-wide rush to get to Christmas.
Thanksgiving is not advertised in the same way as Christmas. Why is that? I look at Thanksgiving as more intimate. What do I mean by that? For Thanksgiving, we focus on giving thanks to the one’s closes to us and for what we have. No matter what race, what religion, or sexual orientation. It can be personal, special, and completely different from each person who celebrates it…and that is something you can’t advertise. You cannot sell authentic and genuine company over a commercial or sales ad.
No matter the person, it is a holiday where we all enjoy each other’s company, have enjoyable family events, eat tons of food, and for my family watch a lot of football!
