A constellation is a group of stars that form a pattern or image, such as the Great Hunter Orion, Leo, or Taurus. Each constellation is a collection of stars that are distributed in three-dimensional space; all the stars are at different distances from Earth.

The faintest stars may be smaller, farther away, or cooler than the brightest stars. Also, the brightest stars are not necessarily the closest.
