Moving can often be stressful, especially as for students, it tends to happen in the midst of finals. When moving, be sure to consider these following five points.
1. Figure out a budget
Even when figuring out a monthly cost for rent, other things to consider include security deposit, moving in fee, activation fees for bills, and how much bills will cost - which often depends on the size of your apartment in regards to heating and cooling.
2. Consider the neighborhood
Proximity to school or work may be a priority, or else direct access via public transportation could be another. Neighborhood safety is another factor to keep in mind, along with expenses. If having a lot of businesses (such as bars and restaurants) is your priority, then consider apartment hunting in those areas. Other things to keep in mind are proximity from grocery stores, clinics, and pharmacies.
3. Plan a walk-through ahead of time
If you can, designate a day or weekend to look at all potential apartments, as opposed to scattering appointments over weeks. While the apartments are fresh, it will be easier to compare minute details to each other.
4. Call and set up utilities ahead of time
While you may not possess the keys to your new apartment until your move in date, cable, internet, electric and heating companies have building access. It’s best to set up these accounts and installations ahead of time, because it can save yourself multi-tasking when you do eventually move in and unpack.
5. Consider roommates
It can often help save money on utilities and rent if someone else (or multiple people) are contributing towards the same bill. Additionally, groceries and other expenses may become cheaper should you and your roommate(s) work out an agreement. I’m personally a fan of sharing space, as well as having my own and an apartment with your own bedroom can provide the best of both worlds.
