Confidence. Self-esteem. Body image. Today it is hard to be confident. We have the media, our peers, society telling us how to look, dress, wear our hair.
When I wear leggings tucked into socks and my Birkenstock clogs, I get asked, "What the f**k are you wearing?" When I go out on the weekends I get told, "You're barely wearing any makeup" or "Those are not going out clothes." When I say I don't like wearing crop tops I get asked, "But why? You have such a great body." When I wear my hair the same way every day I'm told, "You should wear it this other way because it looks better."
I am not the world's most confident girl. I don't always love my body. I don't always like how I look or choose to dress. Some days I think my hair is flat, or too frizzy. Some days I think my nose is too big. But does that mean the rest of the world can comment on how I look? If I think I look good in leggings and Birks, or I think it's comfortable, then who has the right to tell me not to wear them?
Everyone cares about everybody's business too much. We need to focus more on ourselves. Who cares if you wear mismatching clothes? It is no one's business. If you are comfortable showing off your body, then do it! If you like spending the time to do your hair and makeup, don't let someone tell you you're too vain. Do what makes you happy. Isn't happiness the only thing that really matters in life?
I like wearing Birks. I think they are comfortable and practical. I also like wearing Lilly occasionally because I think it's cute. Who has the right to tell me not to wear them together? So what if I'm combining preppy and crunchy granola? I like it, and it's comfortable. I don't like wearing makeup. I feel self-conscious when I wear it, so I really only put it on for special occasions. Why should anyone care if I wear makeup to class or not? I happen to like how I look and feel without makeup, so you should respect me for that.
We live in a world where everyone is always putting down other people. We need to create a supportive environment. Are we not a society of individuals? Everyone is unique, so why should we conform to the norms and all wear the same clothes, have the same hobbies? Being yourself helps you form stronger, more genuine relationships. You help create a more diverse society. Isn't it boring when everyone around you is the same? Be original. Don't be afraid to be yourself.
Happiness is the only important thing, so do what makes you happy. Be confident in those choices and most importantly, be you.
