I love movies. No, really, I love movies. My DVD collection is extensive and nine times out of 10 my Snapchat story has a picture of a movie ticket stub. Let’s see, within the past five months I’ve seen "Sisters"three times; "Daddy's Home" three times; "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" twice; "Zootopia" twice; "Batman Vs. Superman" twice; and "Captain America: Civil War" three times. That’s not including the movies I saw only once in theaters in those five months. I guess you could say I spend a lot of money on movies, but people always spend more money on their favorite hobbies. Mine just happens to be watching movies.
I’ve been watching movies since I was a little kid. Hasn’t everyone? It started out with the Disney classics and just escalated from there. I feel very at ease when watching a film. It’s almost like a little escape from reality. Whatever if that sounds cheesy. I'll never forget when I was really young the Disney Channel released a movie called "Phantom of the Megaplex." It was like a "Phantom of the Opera" for little kids. Mickey Rooney's character, Movie Mason, had a line that I'll never forget. He said, "the movies can teach us about life." I constantly think of that quote and as much as it was geared for a children's movie, I will always find it relevant.
I have two absolute favorite genres of movies. I get my love of comedy from both my parents and my love of superhero movies from my dad. When I was little I wanted to be an actress, that went way downhill because I have this fear of improvisation and I felt that I would have to do a lot of that. If you take a look back at my Halloween costumes, you’ll see a plethora of movie characters. They range from Ariel and Dorothy to Hermione and Jack Sparrow. This year I’m thinking maybe Agent Carter or Princess Leia. (I’ll probably change my mind a million times.)
I haven’t even gotten to my biggest confession yet. I separate all of my DVDs. OK, that’s not too surprising, but I’m not finished. I separate all of my DVDs by actor, and they go down the line by year of release. Think what you want, but if you want to watch "Thor," it’s in the third column second movie down. Do you want to know which actors I have an abundance of? My favorite ones of course. Let’s see, Leonardo DiCaprio has the biggest stack because he’s my absolute favorite. Following close behind are Zac Efron, Miles Teller, Mark Wahlberg, Chris Hemsworth/Evans/Pine, Dylan O’Brien, Harrison Ford, Selena Gomez, etc. I could go on for days. Long story short is that I like to keep them in order.
When I go to Target I never leave without checking the DVD section. Five dollar DVDs are such a steal and I always buy at least one. You’re probably wondering if there are movies I don’t like. Well, there are, but they’re far and few. I have a really big interest in the technical side of movie making, and I think that’s why I’m not too picky. I do, however, have a soft spot for classics: "Casablanca;" "The Wizard of Oz;" "Raiders of the Lost Ark;" "Alien;" "Footlight Parade;" Singin' in the Rain;" "The Public Enemy;" anything with John Wayne; etc. (I hope some of you readers caught on to all those movies I just mentioned.) There’s just something about old Hollywood that entices me and I don’t think there’s as big of an appreciation for it anymore.
By now you’re probably wondering if I have an absolute favorite film. That’s one question you can’t ask a movieholic. It’s kind of impossible to answer. I don’t even know if I could name my top 10 favorites, but you're welcome to guess some of them in the comments.
It's hard to put my love for film into words. I truly don't think I'll ever be able to relay the message how I want, but until then I'll just continue to watch as many movies as I can and be inspired by them. I may not be your typical movie lover, but my endless stack of movie stubs and DVD shelves make for interesting conversation when I have company over. Plus, my brain is just full of movie trivia.
