It's true, we exist! I am a girl who knows, understands, and loves sports. Why is being a female sports fan so out of the ordinary? It's not rocket science that being a girl itself is hard enough, but it's especially hard to be a girl who loves sports. And I mean actually loves sports.
Once you reveal to a male that you like sports, there is an immediate evaluation process that you have to go through to be a "legit fan." Questions that are asked consist of having to name players on the team, knowing how many championships this may or may not have one, being asked if you "understand" the rules, and getting this repeated question:
"Oh, it's just to look at the hot athletes, right?"
Nope. Sorry to disappoint you, but when I was seeing my first ever live hockey game at age five, I didn't love Martin Brodeur because of his attractive looks, I loved Martin Brodeur because of his incredible talent, and his drive to win. Seriously, it's quite annoying to constantly have to prove yourself to everyone that you're a true fan.
What makes you think that you more qualified and have better knowledge for sports just because you're a male?
There are other female sport lovers like me who hate the stereotypes that seem to diminish our love for them. We sport lovers are dedicated fan, our main goal is to wear my jersey, drink some beer and enjoy the game, not for selfies or attention. So long story short, we don't like sports to impress a boy, because our love for sports came in our own unique, special way, there's a reason we are so passionate about the sports we watch.
The reason I fell in love with the sports and the teams I watch today was because of my dad's side of the family. My uncles and dad would bring me, my brothers, and all my cousins to so many baseball, hockey, and football games growing up, and watching it too whenever we got together. No matter what was being celebrated, there was always some sort of game playing in the background that we would eventually all sit down to watch. My own grandmother went out of her way to take me to the New Jersey Devil's Stanley Cup Ceremony when they won in 2003, it's still one of the best childhood memories to me to this day.
So instead of questioning female sports fan on the history of sports, why can't we experience the bond of liking the same team? And believe me, whatever team you likes matters. Because if you like the team I despise, we probably won't get along. But besides the point, dating a girl who loves sports is nothing but benefits because:
1. I'll never make plans on Sunday
2. I won't be distracting during a game, because I am watching the game with you
3. The best dates we'll have are at sporting events.
What isn't there to love?
And even though I love sports it doesn't mean I have to watch SportsCenter 24/7. It means asking for tickets to some game for at least one holiday a year, it means NEVER purchasing pink sports gear (I already have a million sport t-shirts stuffed in my drawer), and feelings the emotions a fan feels on the progress of their team over the course of the season.
So let's be clear: no, we're not trying to be 'one of the guys' when we talk and watch sports, we're just being our normal sports loving self, and I think it's about time we drop the unnecessary stereotypes, and accept us because we're a blast!!
