It seems as though there is always some sort of #challenge taking over the internet, like planking, or the ice bucket challenge, although that one was for a good cause and raised a lot of money, but the most current one may be the strangest one yet; the condom challenge. You're probably thinking "what in the world," and you're not alone, that was my initial reaction. It's still my reaction weeks later.
A few weeks ago, a video popped up on the internet of two guys fooling around with what seemed to be a water balloon, but was, in fact, a water-filled condom. See the video here. This user's comment, 'Nunya business,' just says it all: "Well thats a lot better video than I expected involving two men in the shower with a condom." After garnering over 9,000 views (they're currently at 500,000+ views), more videos started appearing with teenagers all over the world imitating what has now been named the condom challenge.
I can't say that this is the most dangerous challenge to hit the internet, though, let's think back to that other "condom challenge" where people stuffed (hopefully an unused) condom up their noses and snorted it to the back of their throats. Who would ever do that? Apparently, thousands of teenagers would. Now they're at it again, with a seemingly just as dangerous challenge, only this one involves the condom being filled with water and ending up over their head, covering their mouths and noses. Real smart, people.
Rumors have surfaced over the last several days that this challenge has "claimed its first victim." Emily Stone from Austin, Texas, has reportedly died from inhaling a toxic combination of lubricant and water, which caused her to drown. This has not been a confirmed case, and it is questioned as whether or not it is a hoax. My bets are that it's a hoax, because I can't seem to find anything other than two short articles mentioning it on the internet. If it was true, I think it would be all over the news and internet.
Regardless of whether or not anyone has died from doing this as of now, this challenge definitely has some serious safety risks, such as blocking both ways of breathing, so we should probably try to put an end to this sooner rather than later. Though knowing kids these days, this will be a thing of the past in no time. Remember the Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge over the summer, or the "Coning" challenge? Yeah, me neither.
Didn't your mother ever tell you not to put a plastic bag over your head? The same thing goes for a water-filled condom.
