Residence hall, dorm, boarding...whatever you call it at your university, there is a group of people working to improve your living situation at your school. Ever since the fall of 2017, I have been involved in my school’s Residence Hall Council. During meetings, we plan events for the students as well as address concerns of those living within the halls.
Recently, I got the chance to attend a conference with Illinois Residence Hall Association. This event works with universities across the state of Illinois to help promote communication, cohesion, and leadership to residence hall associations. The conference also works on providing programming and resources that members can bring back to their universities to improve their school.
To some, this may sound like a drag...but I will be the first to tell you it was a BLAST.
Before attending IRHA 2018, I did not really take the time to get to know my fellow RHC members. This trip taught me a lot about the people I saw every week, but never bothered to get to know on a more personal level. Along with getting closer with those I attend school with, I met so many exuberant and bright individuals that I might not have met otherwise! There’s nothing quite like simultaneously locking eyes with someone across the room while you both lip sync to The Backstreet Boys. Along with teaching me so much about leadership and programming, this event taught me how to let go and have fun!
It’s so easy to get caught up in the daily stresses of life, but IRHA reminded me that you shouldn’t let those minute details bring you down. Life is about making connections with others and enjoying what you do. Even if you look absolutely ridiculous, sometimes you just need to get up on that stage and ride that pony.
I am so glad I have gotten the opportunity to travel and learn with some amazing people. Whenever you get the opportunity, do something that might be outside your comfort zone; you might end up loving it.
